Why limit post editing on direct messages?

I understand limiting the number of times a public post can be edited, as a lot of editing can change the whole post.
But limiting private messages editing is overstepping the line, in my opinion.
Most times a private message post cannot even be edited once. Not even to correct spelling mistakes.
Too much control if you ask me.

Look, I don’t know the exact reason why SW admin did it, but from the technology point of view the shorter edit window works specifically for cost management and system security.

Because every message modification triggers a backend API call and a database write, allowing users to update old messages indefinitely would create unnecessary, expensive overhead. Capping it at 10 minutes or until the recipient sees it, minimizes these recurring costs and prevents users from exploiting the system.

I can't tell. I don't have multiple accounts to test it. Yet I suspect that what you are referring to is a reputation thing.

The bigger your reputation though, the more privileges (more freedom, they changed the wording) you have.

I have repeatedly edited PM's several times before. Unfortunately that FAQ item doesn't include anything about PM's.

It does talk a little bit about "time limits", "reputation" and "more freedom".

Please note some new users have complained about not being able to PM anyone at all. 🤷🏻‍♂

I suspect their PM's are going straight into "message requests" in that case, which give no notifications to the recipient.

It's still a reputation thing. New users have no reputation.
