Why can’t the downvote feature just be invisible?

It’s used to curate our feeds, right? So why should anyone other than the downvoter have to see it? What’s the point in making users feel like their content isn’t welcome?

*Edit*
Thank you everyone who commented to help me understand this situation! Unfortunately I’ve always been a little naive in the way I try to see the best in people. I do that to a fault and gave the admins the benefit of the doubt. So I was stumped when I saw this built in tool we could see specifically made to put people down. The excuse they gave was curating our feed, but that didn’t add up. If that was truly the point, then we wouldn't need to see it. You all helped point out that seeing it makes it an advertisement and tempts people to buy VIP so they can see who specifically downvoted. In other words, this harmful feature to the SW community that promotes, drama, trolling, and makes people feel bad is done purely for the sake of them profiting off your pain. It makes sense when you view it like this. Sad to see my reason for leaving was and still is justified.
TheLordOfHell · 41-45
I think the downvote is proof that admin promotes trolling. Yes I said that, admin. Kiss it.

@TheLordOfHell You’re right. They do promote trolling. I wasn’t sure why until reading a few of these comments. They stand to profit from people’s suffering here. That’s why it’s promoted.

It needs to be removed.
@SW-User I agree
@SW-User I also agree.

Yep. And it worked on me. I finally got VIP mainly so I could see downvotes. I think when my VIP runs out I might finally leave for good. No change the admins have made recently has been an improvement. Not one.
TexChik · F
because they want the drama? I am just happy that they finally allowed me to see who is downvoting our posts so I can put them out of my misery.
Reject · 26-30, M
@TexChik Yeah, I gave SW admins too much credit with the benefit of the doubt. They do want the drama. Why? Simple. The same reason anyone is administration does things to harm people. There’s money in it.

Am I the only one who doesn't give a heaving dump about the DV button?

People block each other left and right but no one seems to care about that.
Reject · 26-30, M
@CestManan I don’t think most people care that much about it honestly. That’s not what I’m asking about. The question is why have it visible to begin with?
CestManan · 46-50, F
@Reject Okay so to answer that -

I have not not even seen many DV posts lately, I believe one has to be VIP to see who DV them or to even see it at all. I am not VIP.

It is also possible that people have backed off using it since it is no longer anonymous to everyone but the person who DV'ed and the VIPs.

Just slightly educated guesses on my part but there it is.
Reject · 26-30, M
@CestManan I’m not a VIP and I still see them, not often, but I do. I can’t see who specifically downvoted and I guess that’s a VIP feature. So yes, that could contribute to why people do it less, but all of that being said, it doesn’t answer exactly why they choose to make this visible at all. If they did what you’re saying, and made it a VIP exclusive, then at least we could say money was their reason.
ChiefJustWalks · 26-30
I've only been downvoted a few times & I don't even care 😂

But the other day someone downvoted me & I noticed she made a post talking shit about me after so I simply blocked her 🤷 no harm no foul
ChiefJustWalks · 26-30
@Reject very true. There's a lot of people here who struggle with acceptance & I think it's messed up to allow a way for people to throw shade anonymously. I agree with the profiting off pain part you mentioned too. It's toxic if anyone were to buy VIP just to see who downvoted them when all that does is help them know where the judgement came from. People are naturally curious even if it hurts them. I may not care about the downvote feature but I certainly don't see any healthy reason it would need to be there
Reject · 26-30, M
@ChiefJustWalks That’s exactly right. All of that. You hit on the nail on the head. You know the main reason I left before was because of how much I didn’t like this feature and what it was doing to people here. Months later and they’ve made a couple polls ignoring how we feel, then updated it to be even worse. At least we never have to question why people are toxic on SW. They’re only given tools to exacerbate it.
CestManan · 46-50, F
@ChiefJustWalks Honestly, the DV though is very tame compared to some of the things I have seen on forums. I been on a few that had sections set aside for people to flame and insult each other. Things people came up with were unreal.

Just how soft have people become that something like a downvote hurts their feelings?

Maybe I do not get easily hurt because during parts of you youth I had to deal with some extremely rude pricks, I dunno.
Downvoting is just for passive aggressive cowards that are too afraid to say how they feel. Soft cocks.
Can’t believe the fucking idiots created this feature.

No, vip doesnt allow you to see who down voted , that's bullshit.
Its still anonymous even to VIPs.

I asked this same question .
If its for altering the feed to see less of what you dont like, it has no need to be visable to function.

Its a drama-rama.

Its creation makes content. We complain and question it over and over.

Admin asked years ago about mood response emojis, there was a whole admin generated thread about it .

Admin claimed they wanted to increase positivity, interaction and reaction on posts .

It was voted upon .
They , att, decided not to include too many negative emojis to keep things positive .

And that's what we got , and we were happy with it...

...for a time .

Then admin went back on their word , and look where we are now: a visable downvote, (added approx two years later) , that angers and upsets vulnerable users .

Its bullshit.

Conflict creates content.
Govenrment does this to distract the masses .

Edit : some vips claim to be able to see who down voted. 🤷‍♀️
I cant , but then my VIP was bought years ago .
Reject · 26-30, M
@OogieBoogie Yes, you’re right about the fact that it’s purpose is drama and creating conflict is a tactic you see the government implementing too. It’s what people in power do to secure it further. It has no consideration for those beneath them. It only serves to benefit the higher ups.

I dont see whats so harmful about speaking ones mind, if you dont like something and downvote, then own it, there is nothing wrong with that.
Reject · 26-30, M
@checkoutanytime It’s not harmful in any way we can’t help, I was just confused as to why they gave us a built in tool specifically to put people down. I understand now though. It was for money.
The site wants the downvote, for whatever reason. Most posters didn’t want it and said so, but it was added anyway. The newest thing, btw, is that those too cowardly to risk being identified by posters with VIP will downvote and then block you. On one hand, that’s good—they’re gone from any future interaction. But it’s proof that their only reason for downvoting is to hit and run.
SW-User
I never understood what its purpose was to begin with.

If content breaks rules or laws, you can report it.
If you dont want to see a post, you can hide it.
If you don't want to see any of a particular user's posts, you can mute or block them.

I don't see the point.
Reject · 26-30, M
@SW-User You’re right! It doesn’t make any sense and typically when something is confusing, you can be sure of one thing. Someone did something for selfish reasons. After reading these comments I realized it’s just another way for them to make money. It’s genuinely harmful to the community here, but not enough to pass up on the extra money.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
Poll was taken. Yet the poll didn't have the most important answer, which was to remove the DV.

They went "STRICTLY" by the highest poll results, which was to allow VIPS to see their DVs and no one else's DVs.

They actually knew the result before the poll though. It was worded in such a way that the most would be for VIPs. They actually wanted to use that option regardless of the poll. It makes VIP option that much more attractive.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@bijouxbroussard difference is on how it's used. Dislike never effected your feed. None of those effect your feed. DV actually does effect your feed.
@DeWayfarer They didn’t reveal how they were going to use the dislike button when it was proposed. I asked Andrew and he basically acknowledged this was that. He said that they decided there wasn’t "enough of a difference" in poll results between the yeas and nays to offset the "benefits" they decided it would provide.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@bijouxbroussard I suspect they knew very well, just by the fact of the proposal with a vote at that. I've had conversations with both on this. They are not always in agreement. In fact there's a bit of rivalry between them.

Funny fact. While Andrew made the first admin announcement, Nuno jumped the gun on him so his is the first post while Andrew's is the second.
