Officially I think it was because the owners could no longer afford to maintain it. Apparently the real reason was they feared lawsuits because of the murder. Last time I looked that dude was still in prison.

I heard it was simply bought out by some corporation/person who had ideas on re-thinking how it worked. Essentially, the founder took the money and left.

It happen to Yahoo Inc. also, nationwide class of consumers who had their communications with third parties intercepted or used by Yahoo without their consent, or who had a ConnectID or other identifier intercepted or assigned by Yahoo.
