It's easy to look back with fondness while wearing the rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia, but boy was it a party!

I met real people on there, people who became good friends (online and in real life) It was before Twitter turned everyone into keyboard warriors. Yes, there were disagreements and trolls aplenty, but even the trolls made it an experience (apart from the bad attitude/axe-to-grind sort). There was certainly more engagement back then, I think it's because back then it was something new and fresh and we hadn't learned to (or chose not to) jump on every post we disagreed with. If you didn't like the post - just move on to the next one without judgment. That was the backbone of EP - respectful engagement. The internet was fairly new so we made the rules up as we went along. I know some refer to it as 'The Wild West' and there is probably a lot of truth in that analogy but boy was it fun!!

So to me, the biggest difference between EP and SW is this - I pop on and off SW, sometimes going months without visiting. EP on the other hand EP was our 'go-to' social media, almost addictive. the people (and times) of EP literally made me jump on planes several times to visit my EP friends, it had that much power back then (for me anyway). SW on the other hand . . . . whilst it is what it is and there are those that find it serves a purpose, it certainly ain't no replacement for EP.

@afreshstart77 If it was so great then why the shipwrecking, please??
afreshstart77 · 61-69, M
@helenS We didn't control the finances.
helenS · 36-40, F
@afreshstart77 So you think the site went bankrupt?
afreshstart77 · 61-69, M
@helenS EP shut down in April 2016. The closure was announced by the site's founder, Armen Berjikly, citing challenges in sustaining the platform.

@afreshstart77 I only knew EP in its last days. When did you join it?
helenS · 36-40, F
@afreshstart77 Thank you – I didn't know. 🌷

@ServantOfTheGoddess Must have been back in 2009 - 2010, it was quite well-established when I joined. I can still remember how I found it and my first ever post on ANY social media platform!

@helenS I heard that EP shut down because of possible legal repercussions after one EPer murdered another... :(
I have no idea as to the veracity of that story.
afreshstart77 · 61-69, M
@walabby News to me, never heard that one. Besides, EVEN if it were true, why is Tinder still online? No, it was purely financial.
ServantOfTheGoddess · 61-69, M
@walabby That certainly happened, at least I have read about it in news reports as well as on here, but I don't know if that was involved in EP shutting down.

@ServantOfTheGoddess I only heard about it on here, and the people discussing it could well have conflated the two events...
