I dont understand why so many people ask where i am from when they say hello

@Rokan I would because sometimes European and Asian cultures are different from American culture, and you don't want to say anything awkward because............
I get way too many of these replies: "Sorry, I don't understand American lifestyles," or "I do not know what you are talking about since I am not American."
So, it is much better of they have where they are from so you can understand who and where you are talking to.

@helenoftroy2000 id rather you just say whatever is most true to you. It feels more like to me im being scouted for something. Oh he is American and probably has money etc... it use to happen a lot when people from India, middle east, Indonesia, or the Philippines would say hello and try to talk.
