Nina's Blog - Tuesday 27th October 2026

Had to go out today to get the wheels swapped. More expensive than usual because they discovered two leaking valves which had to be replaced.

The workshop has replaced its lifts since the last time which is more convenient for the driver because it's essentially a large scissor jack that sits entirely under the car instead of two posts. My car is wider than average and the posts are exactly opposite the front doors making it quite a squeeze to get in and out. But it seems that getting the car in the right position on the new lift is more finicky. It took several tries to get it right.

I decided to visit the Salvation Army charity shop while here and was very confused when I put the name into the navigator. It had the marker on the map in the right place but the route was in the opposite direction! It turns out that the shop has moved. It seems that the location and the address are separate items in the satnav database; or some other explanation.

So now I'm having coffee and cheesecake at the Jordbærpikene before heading home.

@Willyp063 If you ever visit Northern Europe, especially UK or Norway, drop me a line, perhaps I might be not too far away. :-)

Today's jewellery is Halloween themed. I don't celebrate Halloween itself but skulls, etc., were some of my late wife's favourite themes. She was politely, but firmly, asked to refrain from wearing a scarf prominently decorated with skulls when she wore it to a chemotherapy session. :-)

Markers on digital maps can be inaccurate even if the thing has not moved.

I was trying to determine what had become of a particular rural roadside pub that still displayed its sign, and using Google Maps to identify the correct one showed it on a separate road some distance away.

@ArishMell Not in this case. The marker was in the exact location that I expected it to be. I have a suspicion that it has something to do with having marked this destination as a favourite in the navigator. You can edit the text when you do that so presumably it makes a copy of the record. But since then the map has been updated so the record in my favourites list no longer corresponds exactly with the one in the map database.

I'll take a look at the favourites list and check to see if it makes a difference whether I pick the destination from there or from search results.

@ninalanyon I didn't know you can stick a marker in place. Perhaps it depends on the system.

I used my sat-nag on Saturday evening for part of my long drive home, and though it took me to the way-point I wanted, it gave me a rather odd route to that.

@ArishMell The sat nav in my tesla is a touch sensitive screen. You can tap the marker at the destination and it will pop up a box with the name and address of the place. On the pop-up there is also a button that you can tap to add to your favourite locations. You can add your own text to make searching easier. When you search for a place it searches the favourites first.

I checked what was happening and i think my surmise was correct because when I searched and for the Salvation Army and clicked the enter button to display the whole list it showed the new location in addition to the one stored in my favourites. Choosing the correct one placed the destination marker in the correct place.

So I'll delete that favourite and add the new one as a favourite.

One reason for adding favourites is so that they come first in the search results which is helpful if you are near a river with few bridges or a fjord because the list is sorted by distance as the crow flies which can result in the top results being on the other side, physically close but a long way away by road.
