Grr. One of my oldest mixing bowls has finally died. I whisked an egg in it so that I could brush a pastry with egg. Cooked the pastry and went off to eat it. When I came back to throw the remaining egg away and wash the bowl most of the egg was on the counter instead of in the bowl! There's a crack right in the middle of the bowl. It's annoying because it was a very convenient size for mixing small quantities, it's a three pint bowl. Can't remember where it came from or when we bought it. In fact I'm not even be sure we did buy it, perhaps it was given to us by either my mother or my wife's mother. Either way it's well over forty years old.

It's amazing just attached we can get to such things.

@22Michelle I find that things that I use frequently over many years attain a kind of familial status. They become part of my life. I think it stems from, or at least is closely associated with, growing up in circumstances in which one had to wait for what one wanted, to save up or wait for Christmas. I don't mean that my parents were poor but they certainly weren't as well off as I am.

So once one did get something it was more precious than if it had been obtained instantly because I knew a replacement would take a while to obtain. Then as things age some fall apart early but some are robust, useful, and used; then they end up sharing your life. So when one finally disintegrates after a lifetime that is more than half one's own it can take on a significance out of all proportion to the actual loss.

After all it's just a three pint polypropylene bowl. Not a work of art.

But now I have to decide whether to replace it and if so with what. Should I buy new or visit the parts of the charity shops that I don't normally bother with. And there is another point to ponder: I don't need a new one to last as long as this one did, I don't think I'll be baking much in forty years time, so it's also a kind of memento mori.

I think that I'll just live without it for now; I have other bowls i can use though they are all slightly less convenient.
