After installing the latest version of Linux Mint a couple of weeks ago my laptop was unable to print on the printer shared by the computer that has an old Canon laser and my Epson scanner connected to it.
I realized today that it wasn't some obscure networking problem caused by the simultaneous switch to a new WiFi router but simply that the new version of the CUPS printer software has changed the name of the printer. So telling CUPS to search for the printers again and using the name it displayed made it work. It also occurred to me, belatedly, that I needn't specify the printer in every script because I only have one printer so I just set it as default and remove the destination from every invocation of lpr.
