🎶I've become so numb, I can't feel you there... Become so tired, so much more aware🎶
With some thinking, I realize I have never dealt with any trauma in my life.
It was not something that was encouraged growing up.
It was taught to get on with it and put the past behind you.
Nobody talked about mental health unless it was derogatory
Those crazy people over there, and you did not want to be one of them.
You did not want the label
Mental health days were nonexistent and would, frankly, have been laughed at if someone brought it up.
This is just the way it was; not saying it was healthy.
My family, even the one sister I am close to, does not want to hear about any trauma, and the one brother I am close to can mostly only see his own pain.
I always felt my younger brother and I were the aliens in the family of boisterous siblings.
Both shy, socially awkward, and too quiet.
We never learned to fight for anything, to speak our minds openly, and we stayed quietly in the background.
We are self-aware of our mental illness.
We just don't know how to fix it.
That doesn't mean my other family members have not shown signs of neurotic behavior.
One is schizophrenic, and I suspect a few are narcissistic when you count the extended family.
But they are not self-aware, and like a bunch of emotional hyenas, they will make a feast out of others' strange behavior.
Not all of them, but enough to make it uncomfortable to be around all of them at a gathering.
I don't know if it is wise to write these things out or to keep them to myself, as I was taught.
Will it help me ?
Will it help others?
