After a long and pleasant walk down to where the Trent is joined by the Beeston canal at the Beeston end then along the canal to the big Boots distribution centre and from there to Highfield Park I decided to stop at the D H Lawrence Pavilion café for coffee. But it has no air conditioning and a lot of south west facing glass so it was hotter inside than out!. So I kept going and now I'm in the café under the Portland building. It faces the sun even more precisely just now but it's at least four times as deep and the windows are not so tall so it's much cooler at the back where the sun doesn't reach. And it's a big stone building Having a salmon, cucumber, cream cheese and dill bagel and a large Americano.

Note that the footpath is supposed to be closed from September 2025 to March 2026. But now it's August 2026 and the bridge is still not open. But that's not what annoys me it's lackadaisical attitude to accuracy and functionality that pervades quite a lot of the country. As I drive around the country I frequently see signs beside the road warning of conditions that clearly are not the case. Warnings for flooded roads in the middle of droughts for instance. I'm not referring to fixed signage warning that a road is liable to flooding but to temporary signage warning of actual flooding that is not removed when the danger has passed.

Diversion signs seem the most common ones left any old where, but the Police are the worst for posting no signs when they close a road to deal with an accident. One sign to point you off down some side-road, then hope you know your way from there. (Sat-navs will not necessarily work in that situation until you have travelled quite some distance along the side road.)
