As my 10:30 meet didn't happen I walked to the Chichester Metro station and took the Metro to Haymarket. From there it's a short walk to the Hatton Gallery at Newcastle University. Most of it wasn't to my taste which I find interesting in itself because I often visit one of the best modern art galleries, the Henie Onstad, and almost always find something to enjoy in both the permanent and the temporary exhibitions.

But there was one part that I found interesting, the Kurt Schwitters section. The Henie Onstad also has a permanent exhibition of Schwitter's work; but unlike the Hatton this is coupled with items from the people he influenced in the Merz!Flux!Pop! movement. You can see pictures from that in previous blog entries.




The items I found most likeable at the Hatton aren't in the gallery proper but in a stairwell together with the art supplies shop. Perhaps that says as much about me as about the art.


Sometimes a damaged statue can be more interesting than a fully intact one




I thought this was interesting. The fingers are supported by a bridge. Is this intended or is the piece not quite finished?
