Nina's Blog - Saturday 23rd May 2026

Saturday 23rd May 2026, 08,:40

Got up in time for breakfast today. And in an attempt to reduce my outgoings I'm having the full English breakfast that is included in the room price. So I won't feel hungry for most of the day.

It's nice to get a freshly cooked mushroom at breakfast instead of the poorly reheated tinned ones that a lot of hotels supply. The tomato was rather underdone though, still crunchy.

The big question of the day is what to spend the time on. I think I've wandered about the centre of Nuneaton enough and anyway Sue Ryder and the RSPCA are selling everything for a pound which would probably prove too tempting. I bought two things in Sue Ryder and three in the RSPCA yesterday, should have a charity shop purchase free day.

So should I go elsewhere? If so where and by what transport?

You might not know and you have no reason to care but I have an Instagram account. There are just a couple of reels on it and I rarely post anything.

Anyway I have liked a few reels from other people so the algorithm suggests things for me. Usually they are just informative things about Trans events and the like but today it suggested this glorious piece

A few lines that stood out
Finland is in the woods sharpening something
Italy has changed governments four times and is somehow more stable than America.

And in the correction video
Norway has gone outside to stare at a fjord and not text back.

I'm in The Crew, a pub that is also a rock music venue. Having a pint of Aspall's.

I shan't be visiting here again though:

Continuing my circuitous ramble back to the hotel via Riversley Park and the museum where I'm having an Americano and a slice of sponge cake.

I think I'll take a stroll through the galleries after my coffee; I often appreciate things more on second viewing. Then I'll stroll back to the hotel and take a nap.

The problem of what to do today was solved by opening Google Maps and asking it what there was of interest within a few kilometres.

One thing that popped up was 'The Centre of England '. It even has a couple of reviews. One was full of praise for the scenery, the second said that it's not the centre, there's no monument, and the real centre is a couple of kilometres away. As is usual with such comments no evidence was provided for either assertion.

Now I have no particular reason to believe Google or the commenter. But the purpose is mostly to simple have a target far enough away to be worth the walk and close enough to be practical and comfortable.

Glad I did because the area is very pleasant.

Here's a notice at about the location that Google Maps reckons is the centre of England

Here's the Google link to the location

I haven't been able to figure out how to extract actually useful coordinates from Google Maps, sorry.

Right on the edge of the built up area is St James church. It has a very well kept churchyard

I think this is a striking gravestone

What strikes me about the this one is how quickly even those wealthy enough to pay for quite substantial grave plots are forgotten and their plots neglected and overgrown

"Life wins, death has been defeated.", yeah, right

Finally found something worth watching on television: Blue Murder at St Trinians. The scene playing just now as Harry (George Cole) arriving in his bubble car to the background of a stolen Bren gun (4th form) and jazz (6th). Shame it's interrupted by ads already after the first fourteen minutes Four minutes of ads after fourteen of film. 22% ads

Edit 20:34: I give up, I can't take another break for advertisements.
