Nina's Blog - Thursday 21st May 2026

Having breakfast of a couple of slices of toast with butter and Silver Shred. First time I've had Silver Shred in goodness knows how long!

This hotel is quite pleasant but has one glaring flaw. The rooms have connecting doors and these doors are far too light. And my neighbours talk incessantly. They didn't stop until after 23 and were babbling on again before 07. They are at a table a few metres away now and I'm not sure how they are managing to eat breakfast because the gaps between sentences are so short.

There is a small but quite pleasant museum in Nuneaton. It's only open Thursday, Friday, Saturday. So I went today

There is a whole room of mostly splendid monochrome prints from the Eat Midland Monochrome Group. I was especially taken wit this one:

It was nice to see a working clock in a museum, I've mentioned this before I think. This particular one is in a much longer case than usual, perhaps it runs for two weeks instead of one

Then there was the oldest painting in the museum

I rather like the whimsical way the stairway ha been decorated

Unlike the Premier Inn in Kempston which is 5 km from the centre of Bedford the Chase in Nuneaton is barely 1 km from the centre. So if I just wander from hotel to town centre I'll get much less exercise. On the other hand I'll have more time to relax in my room or get on with other projects (programming, sewing, etc.).

Waiting for bacon and maple syrup pancake in Cafe Haven.

The centre of Nuneaton is a sprawling chaotic mess. Part derelict, part being renovated, part very new.

I also neglected to note down a long conversation I had with a 73 year old woman in a shopping centre who asked me if I wasn't afraid of stepping in something unpleasant as not everyone cleaned up after their dogs. I was a little taken aback at this because at the time we were walking on the utterly smooth and really quite clean floor inside the Ropewalk shopping centre. I explained that I've been doing this for decades and hardly ever step on anything untoward. We had a long conversation about how good it had been to grow up in the late fifties and the sixties. Naturally not touching on the fact that even in the seventies I would have been very reluctant to go out dressed even if I had thought of the idea.

Somehow we got on the subject of modern technology and I mentioned how I thought it was strange that so many people think that our generation can't work it when we are the generation that invented it. She replied that we aren't old. I think that's true in her case and mine, she was a vivacious and consciously dressed person who was quite a contrast to the surrounding people, so many of them dressed in dowdy blacks and unflattering sack like clothes.

She asked about my hair and recommended something that I think was called Castor Black from TK Maxx saying that it really worked. Apparently it's cheap, perhaps I'll give it a try.

She headed for TK Maxx and I headed toward the museum.

I forgot to post Thursday's outfit

I won't need the coat today, it's already 18 C, forecast to reach 25 C by 15:00.

Perhaps I shouldn't have wished so hard for warmer weather, the forecast for Monday is a maximum of 29 C!

Here's a notice I've never seen before:

Usually they say don't feed the ducks because it's bad for them

Often the biggest problem with a Hotel is your fellow guests.
