Nina's Blog - Saturday 25th April 2026

Saturday 25th April 2026, 12:35

Made these notes earlier but the WiFi in the café wasn't working.

11:54

Walked up to the Western defences, the Drop Redoubt. Good view of Dover from the top. The castle looks somehow larger seen from there.

Done nearly eight thousand steps so far.

Now I'm in the Brunch & Lunch Florist & Café having a mocha and a cheese and onion toastie. Mocha was nice and hot. Had to ask for it to be made when the toastie was ready though, the proprietor was all for making the coffee first, would definitely have been cold by the time the toastie was ready.

While on the coastal footpath by the Western defences I found a secluded space and had a wank. Got a bit of a headache as I came and my vision was a bit odd. Not blurred but as though my eyes weren't working together, some sort of migraine?

After the footpath I walked out along the main road further west until I reached the Grand Shaft. Unfortunately it's only open on the third Sunday of the month so I've missed that chance.

The whole town is very compact and mostly very walkable except that the road designs are surprisingly pedestrian hostile. There is no pedestrian controlled crossing from the Grand Shaft to the marina and on York Street there is a fence running down the middle of the road making crossing impractical except at the official light controlled crossing places which are a couple of hundred metres apart.

In the car park of the St James Retail and Leisure Park shopping centre is the prettiest distribution transformer kiosk I have ever seen.

The Drop Redoubt at the Western Heights. Described by William Cobbett as 'holes in the ground in which to hide Englishmen from Frenchmen.' and observed that 'more brick and stone have been buried in this hill than would go to build a neat new cottage for every labouring man in the counties of Kent and of Sussex.'

The best thing on the telly just now seems to be The Shadows Final Tour from twenty two years ago!

I took lots of pictures both yesterday and today. But I've noticed that when I take a lot of pictures that I get overwhelmed and end up posting fewer of them. That was exacerbated today by the cafe WiFi not working.

So I'll get on with posting some now. Starting with the last one taken today: today's charity shop haul

That was 4 GBP at the Scope shop. At those prices I just can't resist. I'll have to donate some stuff before I go home or it won't fit in my suitcase. That's going to be difficult because of course the clothes I brought with me are all favourites.
