Staying at a curious place called MaxBed in Flensburg, that's just south of the border with Denmark. None of the rooms have en suite bathrooms but there are several toilets and shower rooms of a high standard both of finish and of cleanliness. Unusually for a place like this it actually has a reception desk, only manned in office hours though and no English spoken.

The downside is that it's 3.4 km from here to the harbour where the museums and cafes are.

From the bridge to the main shopping street which seems to be called Holm is just a few minutes. It has quite a different character compared to Elmshorn, Flensburg is a bigger town but also it is a border town and you can see the connection with Denmark everywhere, most informational signage is bilingual in German and Danish, and there are Scandinavian shops. This one with delightfully whimsical decor

A few metres along the street is a sculpture of a sea creature, a modernist mermaid.

There is apparently enough Art Nouveau in the town to warrant a trail, perhaps I'll take a closer look tomorrow

And there is another Woolworth. I glanced inside and I think it must have been part of the Woolworth's chain originally.

Outside a toy shop is this delightful hippy bus
