Nina's Blog - Thursday 9th October 2025

Staying at a curious place called MaxBed in Flensburg, that's just south of the border with Denmark. None of the rooms have en suite bathrooms but there are several toilets and shower rooms of a high standard both of finish and of cleanliness. Unusually for a place like this it actually has a reception desk, only manned in office hours though and no English spoken.

The downside is that it's 3.4 km from here to the harbour where the museums and cafes are.

It doesn't have any buses that you can take?

@being I expect it does. But I need the exercise anyway so I really should walk. My stride length is about 0.75 m so 3.5 km is only a bit over 4 500 steps. So with a bit of strolling around the harbour it should e about 10 000 steps for the round trip which is the usually suggested daily step count.

@ninalanyon I know yes, so perhaps it's just the right deal for you :)

@ninalanyon The 10,000 stepscame from the fact that the first step counters stopped at 10,000. The system couldn't cope with anything above 10,000 so they sold it as the recommended walk. It's a good number to have as your daily target, but I try to exceed it as often possible.

@22Michelle I didn't know that was the reason. It always sounded like a suspiciously round number.

My rule when I'm at home and hence have some kind of routine is to try to exceed the median number of steps that my step counter has recorded for the last week. That way I'm only competing against myself. I read an article, in the Guardian I think, that basically said that for most people the advice is simply to walk more than before because the average Briton walks only a couple of thousand steps a day.

@22Michelle Got back to my room at about 15:30 after a detour to Lidl for food. Did 12 600 steps.

@ninalanyon 14,667 steps for me. About half was walking to and from the gym. One of these days I might actually be fit.

@22Michelle You mean you don't drive to the gym? :-)
