Nina's Blog - Thursday 18th September 2025

Having a day off :-)

No trips planned for today. I'll go out in a while for a stroll around the holiday park just to get a bit of fresh air and then it will be time to do a bit of admin. and maintenance work. Check my bank accounts. Book next week's accommodation. Do some clothes washing. Wrap some duct tape around the fraying cable on the charger of my electric shaver. Make some notes about projects for the winter. Etc.

So probably not much in the way of scenery pictures today, except that I might get around to posting some from the backlog to posts of other days.

Tomorrow is my last full day in Cornwall so what should I do with it? Go somewhere? Stay in? If I go out how should I travel?

I think I'll just visit Tavistock again and this time I'll go to the museum. By car or bus because it is too far to walk and it has no railway station. There is a bus stop for the number 79 just at the entrance to the holiday park and that goes directly to Tavistock bus station. Well not exactly directly, it detours to Calstock and back first. Takes 43 minutes to travel 8 km.

Driving will actually take about the same time to get there.because to keep the state of charge above 20% I'll have to detour to Lifton and top up for ten minutes.

Scenery at the holiday village.

The view from my holiday lodge

Looking back at the lodge from the same point

The central buildings of the complex where there is a pub, a tiny and pointless shop, games room, and an indoor swimming pool

The foliage within the fence actually hides a pond that is being rehabilitated

The outdoor pool. Too small for swimming but I presume very handy for children to splash about in.

The pub from another angle

More views of the pond

Same here with just a trip into the centre of Paignton, hope you get everything sorted .
Where are you off to next week?

@skimpyboy Swindon in the 1960s was a good place to live, wasn't too bad in the 1970s. But it has lost its way and gone downhill since. The few people I have stayed in contact from my childhood there have moved out. One to France, one only a few miles out of town but he and and his wife now visit the town less often than I do. My sister moved out and also very rarely visits the town and when she does it is almost always to shopping centres on the outskirts.

I recommend that you don't bother visiting!

@ninalanyon lots of places have gone the same way , most places round North Wales are deserted and Blackpool and Fleetwood need massive investment

@skimpyboy Yes, I spent a week in Rhyl in January 2024 when I was toying with the idea of spending winters in the UK and summers in Norway. I gave up that idea rather quickly in favour of what i did this year. Rhyl was a bit dull but not too bad.

I spent three nights in Blackpool in May 2022 and that was considerably worse than North Wales; by far the most depressing town I have ever visited. The B&B I stayed in to the north of the centre was good but the centre of the town was dreadfully run down and not to my taste at all.

I walked the length of the prom twice looking for a tea shop or coffee shop that offered anything more interesting than fish and chips or all day breakfast in surroundings that were more comfortable than a run down works canteen. I found one right at the northern edge of the centre called the Clock Cafe (I think), https://similarworlds.com/random-subjects/whiteboards/4337856-Ninas-Blog-Saturday-21st-May-2022.

It was cheap enough to get drunk there and grim looking accommodation was cheap too but I just can't imagine many people visiting more than once.

Ugh. I hate booking accommodation for specific places. I've just spent two hours trawling hotel booking sites for a six night stay in or near where my sister lives (but not too near!). Finally settled on a Travelodge as the best price and value for money.
