Nina's Blog - Thursday 14th August 2025

Thursday 14th August 2025, 09:27

The green between the accommodation blocks is full of sporty looking middle aged women, and one or two men taking breakfast outside. It's already 20 C, expected to reach 26 C later with a little rain between 13:00 and 14:00, but less than a millimetre altogether.

I think they are members of some sports teams, one of the women has just walked past my room with a jacket on that ha Nederland printed on the back. But what kind of sport I have no idea.

In the Trent Café having a bacon and brie bagel and a large mug of tea.

It's a large high ceilinged room under the south eastern corner of the Trent Building. A very pleasant place to relax but I imagine it would probably be very loud in term time when it would be busier. It's actually surprisingly busy today with perhaps twenty people here, mostly academics, and the café obviously expects a steady stream of customers because the hot counter is loaded with food.

Today is quite a contrast to yesterday, total cloud cover and a cool breeze.

I didn't notice anything photograph worthy until I came to this charming roundabout

Not far from there is the nurse's home

Just a few metres further on is the entrance to the castle

It's hard to read the notice by the door but it says that the adult entry price is 15 GBP which gives you the right to wander about inside the castle every day for a year. I've noticed this at several UK historical sites in recent years. When did this 'scam' start? Surely the vast majority of visitors are not local enough to make it worthwhile for the visitors. Anyway, I'm too man to pay that much and also don't have time today.

Opposite the castle is a pub

And then I'm almost in the centre of Nottingham where there are lots of pigeons

and a beach :-)

On the way back to my room i noticed this crossing in front of the Portland Building

I'm without my car again today as it seems that the air conditioner has some kind of leak that they still haven't located. So today will be more walking about in the Beeston and Nottingham Uni. area. There is a craft beer bar not far away so perhaps I'll go there this evening.

Edit: 18:57: Of course I won't be visiting the craft beer shop, I'd forgotten that it is Nottingham Chameleons tonight. Jayne's going to pick me up on her way there.

Jayne has just given me a lift back from Chameleons. And I have a new wig. Rosalind brought it with her to ask if anyone wanted it as she had decided that she didn't like it. I do have a wig already that I bought at Sparkle last year but it is slightly too small and gives me a headache after a fairly short while. So I thought I'd give this one a try. It makes a quite dramatic difference to how I look and everyone there said it looked good so I bought it. Or rather Jayne did because I haven't any cash. I'll pay her back on Monday when we go out together for coffee.

It was only 15.00 GBP so even if I decide that I don't like it after all it's not a great loss. Less than half the price of the one I have and I think it might be slightly higher quality.

But I can't wear it yet because I haven't got a wig cap with me and I#ll need that to hold my own hair up. I shall have to investigate the shops in Nottingham tomorrow to see if I can find one.

I'm only a few minutes walk from my room at Broadgate but the part of the Nottingham Uni campus that is adjacent to Highfield Park is really photogenic.

Here are some more pictures of the Trent Building

@ninalanyon Massive looking doors. I wonder how much they weigh and what type of hardware holds them up
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@turbineman40 I don't think second and the last pictures where you can see straight through the building have doors. The one which has notices saying Trent Building Main Entrance are a fairly ordinary size, much bigger than in ordinary dwelling but not huge.

@ninalanyon Beautiful and terrific pics Nina.

More pictures from the walk into Nottingham yesterday.

Behind the cafe there is a corridor that leads to a tunnel under the road to the Portland Building, it was full of photographs

But the door to the tunnel is locked so I had to go out the way I came in

And here is the Portland Building which now houses student union offices, small supermarket, various SU facilities, etc.

I walked through the Portland Building and out to this set of steps which is a quite a recent construction

As i walked further towards Nottingham the university buildings became more modern

After the modern buildings I left the University Park Campus

and exited onto the road that divides it from the Queen's Medical Centre, QMC. The bridge that carries the tramway over the road is the Ningbo Friendship Bridge. I was in Ningbo in the late '80s (or was it early '90s?)

On the other side of the A6005 from QMC is a curved building

I took selfies yesterday but ended up too busy to post them. So here is yesterday's (Thursday's) daytime outfit

I wore a more demure outfit to go to Chameleons last night: white blouse and a lightweight tartan miniskirt, but rather longer than this one.
