Nina's Blog - Tuesday 5th August 2025

Tuesday 5th August 2025, 09:37

It's a grey and windy day here in Crewe and I haven't decided what to do with the day. There doesn't seem to be anything in the centre of Crewe that I want to look at so I'll need to go further afield.

I've just looked through my records and I can't see that I have ever visited Market Drayton. It's only 18 miles away according to Google Maps so I think I'll take a drive there and see if there is an attractive cafe,

Ah. Further investigation shows that they have a local history museum but it isn't open today. It's only open Wednesdays 10.30am – 1.00pm and Saturdays 10.30am – 1.00pm.

So do that tomorrow. Back to the drawing board. Trawling my records reveals no trace of Wrexham, It's a bit further but still quite close so that's the general direction for today.

Some not particularly interesting pictures of Wrexham. Despite not seeing much that was particularly memorable walking around the centre of Wrexham for three hours was much more enjoyable than walking around the centre of Crewe. Wrexham has a much better mix of old and new and a lot more cafes several of which looked inviting.

The modern part of this building makes me think of seaside towns like Newquay

St Giles' Church

I wonder why a stone from the church wall was presented to Yale?

Every time I find a sundial the sky is clouded over so I can't tell the time

A 350 year old grave stone embedded in the path behind the church. I wonder if it and the path are contemporary or if the stone was moved there later.

Some maintenance work is being done on the church

The municipal flowers are pretty

This last image shows some of the wide variety of architectural styles that have existed for centuries in Wrexham.

In the Tabernacl café, 1 Hope Street, Wrexham. I didn't have any really specific expectation of what it would look like but I did assume that it would be in a more obviously religious style as it is explicitly set up as part of the church. But in fact it's in what could be described as industrial chic. Having a pleasant mocha and a lemon and pistachio slice
