Nina's Blog - Sunday 8th June 2025

The forecast for today is for sunny spells and no rain. Perhaps I can leave my umbrella behind. Time for a shorter skirt than the last couple of days I think, perhaps even a revealed navel. But it's only 13 C now, not expected to get warmer than 15 C so I'll still need a jacket or cardigan.

Better get dressed and go out. Perhaps I'll head for the Riverside Museum at Blake's Lock on the Kennet and Avon first.

In the John Lewis cafeteria having tea and a tuna and cucumber roll after a long walk via Blake's Lock and the Thames.

I'm feeling rather pleased with myself. As I was taking a picture of a building opposite Reading railway station my hat blew off and landed in a flower bed. Before I had a chance to chase after it a security guard picked it up and handed it to me. As he handed it to me he said "You are looking glamorous for a Sunday!"

This is how I was, and am, dressed

Had a look at Fabguys earlier to see if I had got a message telling me the address of the person I was to visit tomorrow morning. He was supposed to send a message on Friday. There was nothing there so I sent a message saying that I presumed it was off. Quite soon afterwards I got this back:
Sorry Nina, just back from weekend away, friends of hours got burbled so been busy, not a nice experience, so yes cant meet at the moment xxx

4 hours ago

I presume that burbled is a typo for burgled.

So now I have at least a half a day extra to fill tomorrow. What to do? I think I've seen enough of the centre of Reading, except that I haven't looked at the museum yet.

Here's the hotel I'm staying in. Looks quite posh from the front but in fact it's pretty ordinary inside.

Unfortunately I'm not actually staying in that building but the one next door which has cheaper rooms.

@meggie I think it's the first time I've stayed in a Best Western. I picked it simply because it was the cheapest place within walking distance of Reading Museum. All the other options were either more expensive or looked like dives. I'm going to make a point of checking the Best Westerns in future

@ninalanyon if you become a member, which is free, you get free breakfast and accrue points. You can use the points for a free night or get a voucher to spend at shops or restaurants. Sometimes too you may get a free upgrade.

@meggie Interesting. I did join because it immediately gave a small reduction, 10% I think, in the price. I didn't notice the free breakfast though. But that doesn't matter because I try to avoid the temptation of breakfast in favour of an extra visit to a cafe or teashop; I have to think of my figure you know!

Today's wanderings took me to the northern edge of Reading and the Thames

I wonder what LURID FERIS means?

A couple of sunken boats

And an old lifeboat

A more recent bridge

SpudMuffin · 61-69, M
@ninalanyon feris = wild beasts?
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@SpudMuffin I have no idea.

On the north bank of the Thames is Christchurch Meadows and all along the river are hundreds of geese

Then we come to Caversham and another bridge across the Thames back to Reading. And on the bridge is an information board about William Marshal

And just by the rowing club are more geese and lots of swans

This odd thing

is in fact a drinking fountain
