Nina's Blog - Friday 7th February 2025

Friday 7th February 2025, 10:44

Another parcel to post so an excuse to be out of town.

Having engelsk frokost at IKEA. Didn't need to ask them to omit the baked beans this time. There weren't any, and there was no sign that there had been any. I wonder if someone forgot to get any or if they have simply acknowledged that they aren't popular.

I take it that is English breakfast Nina

@SW-User Exactly. Except that it is really just a rough sketch of one using the ingredients that they have to hand. It has bacon, scrambled egg, mushrooms, chips, garlic bread (and usually baked beans in tomato sauce). But the mushrooms are warmed up sliced tinned ones instead of slow fried whole mushrooms, chips are almost never served in England, garlic bread is unheard of in my experience.

But there is no canonical recipe even in England. There are both regional and temporal variations. For instance most Full English breakfasts in England now include ready made hash browns which certainly didn't figure in it when I was growing up half a century ago. And in the North of England it might also include black pudding

They are having an IKEA Family promotion at the moment so including coffee it's only 44 NOK, about 4 USD, so I'll put up with its lack of 'authenticity' :-)

@ninalanyon Black pudding was always in ours even though we lived in the south and it was fried bread. First time I had baked beans with it was in a hotel.

@SW-User I'm quite happy to not have black pudding :-) A good slice of fried bread would be nice but I haven't seen that even in England recently; mind you I don't often have breakfast (have to save the calorie allowance for cake later) so it's likely that I'm not that well informed on what is available.

@ninalanyon unfortunately a lot of places now put toast on and baked beans seem to be the norm. Pity because they now know our mother's and grandparents were right and cooking with dripping is actually good for your body has protein that we need.

@SW-User Fried bread requires a more skilled cook than toast.

@ninalanyon very true especially to get it light gold in colour.
