Nina's Blog - Tuesday 1st October 2024

Tuesday 1st October 2024, 09:48

Another night with poor sleep. So I got up a bit earlier than usual so I've already been out for a walk and to post a couple of parcels.

Low tide this time

Messages on the beach in Norwegian

and English

The beach shelves very gently, the birds just visible in the middle are not floating that are standing on the bottom

And to the left a minute or two later the Swan family

Very atmospheric scenes!

@ArishMell I really like living here. I'm within easy walking distance of the fjord in one direction, ten minutes, and the woods in the other, five minutes to the nearest and twenty minutes to a huge tract of forest with marked paths and prepared cross country ski trails. Yet I'm only an hour from the capital city by car and not much longer by public transport.

I can do most ordinary errands on foot. Within fifteen minutes walk there are four supermarkets (smaller than the usual big UK supermarkets but much bigger than the Tesco Express type), two doctor' surgeries, two dentists, two fast food outlets plus a pizzeria, two chemists, a clothes shop, Vinmonopol, a florist, a cafe, two nail bars and hairdressers.

@ninalanyon A vinmonopol... no pubs in your list!

I have never lived very far from where our family did since I was 7, but made my last house move to be nearer such facilities, and indeed relatives. There are sufficient shops near me for food at least, and a pharmacy and my dentist, the town centre is only a short bus ride away - sometimes I walk one way - but I am not far from the sea or countryside.

@ArishMell There is a pub run by an expat Dane but when i walked past a few days ago there was a notice advertising it for sale. I've never been to it. Drink in Norwegian pubs is so expensive and the range of beer so limited that I never visit them.

@ninalanyon I have only ever drunk in two bars in Norway.

One, in the middle of Mosjöen (I think I've used the right accent) did look something like an English town-centre pub.

The other was in the hotel in Voss that owned the self-catering chalet my girlfriend and I had rented for the week - and we went in there only on our last night in the country. Yes, we did think we were buying the bar!

There was no point in us buying Duty-free alcohol on the ferry because its prices were Scandinavian duty-free, so roughly the same as in UK off-licences.

@ArishMell
Mosjöen
That would be it's name in Swedish i suppose. The ö is not used in Norway although i think the pronunciation is very similar. It should be an o-slash, o with stroke
Mosjøen

And the slash is not an accent or diacritic, ø is a separate letter in the alphabet.

@ninalanyon Thankyou! It's been a long time since I last visited the country, and even longer since last in that town.
