What's the most popular app for writing with friends online in the US?

I have always used Skype, but it's shutting down soon. In Ukraine we all use Viber. What about the US?

I want an app that's meant for RL chatting, that is also capable of sending different file types and doesn't compress sent images.

Look into signal - it has very strong encryption and is great for texting back and forth as well as voice chats. It may also do video chats; I haven't tried that.

If you want an image to go thru undisturbed, just wrap it in a zip file.
