What's the most popular app for writing with friends online in the US?

I have always used Skype, but it's shutting down soon. In Ukraine we all use Viber. What about the US?

I want an app that's meant for RL chatting, that is also capable of sending different file types and doesn't compress sent images.

I don't like FB because it's social media, and I don't use Telegram because it's mainly used in Russia, so I don't trust it. Is WhatsApp popular in the US? Does it compress sent images?

@Nightwings Telegram is harmless. Lots of people here in the US use it.
Same with WhatsApp. Nothing bad. It's simple and convenient. Have fun. ☺

@Zonuss Telegram claims to be encrypted I know, but it's not worth the risk for me. They could end up finding my husband. WhatsApp seems like a good choice if it doesn't compress image files, and can send a reasonable amount different file types, so I guess I gotta try that out myself.
