Maybe they are Christian and know my son is an atheist. Maybe they see me and think he must be as crazy as I am. Maybe they have a thing for kids and is trying hard to stay out of trouble. They could think as a child you were hurt by an adult, they want a relationship with you and think you are keeping your distance to protect your child. I can think about a lot of things it could be.
