Commiserations mate , I can't begin to imagine just how bad you felt after that. Hence my reluctance to post anything last night.

A few of my thoughts for what it's worth.

Southgate is not the genius that many people were beginning to paint him as. He did well to steer his team to a final and deserves credit for that. But when the chips were down he was found wanting. How a team with such an abundance of exciting attacking talent can be set up in such a way that their star striker doesn't even get a sight of goal in 120 mins is inexcusable.

To sit back after the gift of an early goal and expect you're going to keep an accomplished outfit like Italy out for the next ninety minutes was both naive and foolish.

At half time changes should have been made and weren't. Italy picked up where they left off , dominating the midfield and enjoying almost total possession. The equaliser was an inevitability by this point and England were lucky not to lose the game in normal time.

The players (Grealish ,Sancho and Rashford) that should have been brought on to ease that pressure weren't introduced until late into added time , apparently just to take penalties. This was madness. Three kids on who barely had the time to lose the nervous energy in their legs now being asked to to take penalties (bar Grealish , again which was odd) in the biggest game of their life. I knew as soon as Rashford ambled up and the Italian goalie didn't move that the game was up. He had to find the corner and he couldn't , hopelessly over-compensating.

Even then there was a reprieve for England as the usually deadly Jorginho somehow contrived to miss his penalty.

So up steps the 19yr old Bukayo Saka , who has had an absolute stinker since coming on and now has the weight of the world on his shoulders. The inevitable happens.

England have got a good team and have showed they now have the discipline to play out a gameplan. Where they were let down here was in their absolute timidity and their reluctance to change things when the game dictated it. (And the fiasco of the penalty picks.) That falls squarely on the manager.
