Are you a huge football fan?
Will you be watching the Super Bowl on Sunday? While football remains the most popular spectator sport in America, and last year’s Super Bowl between Tampa Bay and Kansas City was the highest-rated prime-time telecast, with over 92 million viewers, the league continues to be plagued by controversies, from the ongoing debate over brain injuries to issues about race. The N.F.L. has acknowledged repeatedly that there are not enough coaches and team executives of color even as nearly 70 percent of players are Black. As of Feb. 9, after a new round of firing and hiring, the league has only five head coaches of color and no Black team owners.
Do you think the N.F.L. has a race problem? And if so, what do you think can be done to bring greater racial equity to its ranks of coaches, executives and owners? Do you think the N.F.L. has a race problem? How big a problem is it that in a 32-team league where most players are Black there are now only five head coaches of color and no Black team owners? What is your reaction to Mr. Flores’s lawsuit? Do you believe Black coaches have been discriminated against by the N.F.L.? What evidence best supports your view? Mr. Flores said, “My sincere hope is that by standing up against systemic racism in the N.F.L., others will join me to ensure that positive change is made for generations to come.” Do you think his lawsuit could lead to changes in the league’s hiring practices and racial composition among its coaches? How so? Ms. Coaston writes that “we’ve gotten nowhere” in the 19 years since the adoption of the Rooney Rule, which requires teams to interview “one or more minority applicants” for the head coaching position. Why do you think there has been so little progress toward diversifying the N.F.L.’s leadership?
Ok, to start off I'm Irish and live in a small town, and have no football team to support other than my national team. Throughout my life, I've been called a plastic fan, glory hunter, fake fan. Etc... As a child I found football quite boring, my grandmother supported arsenal, my granddad and father are united fans.. So those and other English games were on all the time. But I remember back in 2003/4 I was at home or pub, can't remember, do remember it being very late. Like past 12 at night, if I'm not mistaken. Was up way too late for a child lol, it was either a live match or highlights. It was Barcelona vs Sevilla and at the time, in Ireland, it was rare for a foreign team other then premier league or Scottish league to be on. But I saw Ronaldinho play his first game, as i found out later, honestly not sure why I was up so late lol. But i was blown away by the overall type of football, it was beautiful, nothing like tika taka of course for the time, but different then the premier league i was used to. And the goal Ronaldinho scored made me truly fall in love with the beautiful game. After that, i couldn't really get to see any other Barcelona games other then the champions league. But when the channels became available, i watch Barcelona every time they were on. And in the past 6 years, i haven't missed a game. But people who supported united, Chelsea, Liverpool. Etc keep telling me i'm not a football fan. But i didn't fall in love with Barca for trophies, i did for the way they play football. Honest question. Do you follow football in real life? I used to think that this was a given for most FIFA players, but now I’m not so sure.
I mean, some guy got downvoted for daring to suggest that Kante didn’t have a good enough season to warrant his inclusion in TOTY. I mean, there are posts unironically referring to Sissoko as one of the all-time greats. I think it’s cool if people don’t watch football and only play the game. I’m just curious about whether this is the case for the majority of the player base. What is your worst experience or memory as a football fan?
I'll start. Mine was in 2002, when FC Magdeburg went bust and were denied a license to play in the 3rd Division bundesliga, we were relegated despite our results and all the players had to leave the club. Today my club is happily in the Regionalliga (4th div), we are really quite lucky to still be here and that support is still strong. How did you become a fan of your team?
Just curious. I'm fairly new to soccer and also live in America, so I don't really follow my home country's teams when the majority of soccer is focused around the strong European leagues. Which is by far the most delusional football fanbase?
