Can someone tell me why, in a Soccer match, sometimes the referee, after awarding a free kick

He puts his hand up and does not put it down again until another player, apart for the free kick recipient, receives the ball. 🤔

Trying to get the attention from someone in the stands? 🙃😈

@DeWayfarer No, nice response though 😄

maybe it sets time

@Gusman does this sound right?

The referee will signal the positioning and direction of an indirect free-kick in the same way as any other free-kick.

However, to show that the kick is indirect the referee keeps one arm outstretched above his head until after the kick is taken.

It avoids any confusion when a goal is scored directly from a free-kick.

@Jackaloftheazuresand I have been reading something similar
Direct and Indirect free kicks
On a direct kick you can score by kicking the ball directly into the goal. On an indirect kick you cannot score.
An indirect kick must be touched by another player before it can go into the goal – that is the kicker and a second person.
You can tell whether the kick is direct or indirect by looking at the referee.
For an indirect kick, the referee will hold one arm straight up in the air until the second person touches the ball.
No arm up or pointing towards the goal, it’s a direct kick.
In general, a direct kick comes from a contact foul or hand ball. Everything else is indirect.

I don't follow the sport (though I've no time for abuse I see already creeping in here); but I wonder if he is signalling that the free-kick is taking place.

@ArishMell Interesting thought, I do not see the purpose of continuing to keep his hand in the air.
The kick has been taken, sometimes the ball is in transit for 3 - 4 seconds. 🤷‍♂️

Maybe ball is "in play" again?

No idea

It's a dumb boring sport with meathead fans
