does bathroom vent not work?
TeaUrchin · F
@wildbill83 it is a high end one, and it still isnt enough

When my parents were living with us they both chain smoked. We installed several hepa filters, and it did help, but the filters had to be thrown out every month as they would be completely covered in tar and other gross stuff. I cannot imagine what that does inside your body.
Can you convince them to smoke outside?
TeaUrchin · F
@RunTheJulz we all tried that over the years. He chooses strong smelling insense because thats all he can smell and drowns the place. If you switch it out he complains and sulks. He really is oblivious to his surround if cigarettes are near. Its smokey but oh dear, no one can breathe.
RunTheJulz · 46-50, F
@TeaUrchin I’m so sorry 😞. I hope some solution can be found 🙏
TeaUrchin · F
@RunTheJulz thank you. It will be whatever it is meant to be
TeaUrchin · F
The vent is about 5 years old and it does work, the vent and unit is clean, itjust when he exits there is alot of smoke. I have no idea whst ceiling fan to buy for a 2piece bath and stacked washer&dryer.

The air filter sounds good. Is that wired in? And does it sit high or row

A bathroom normally is not in the center of a house that's a little confusing and usually has a window that can be opened that being said most bathrooms especially Master bathrooms come with an electric ventilation switch next to the light switch that will suck all humidity out of the room and usually is good for cigarette smoke as well or other things. That being restricted there are also choices of small plug-in air purifiers that do work fairly decently as long as he is not in their chain smoking

@KingofBones1 its a weird house. It was a one bedroom initial with the kitchen off the back door. The they added an addition to include a larger kitchen and master bedroom. And for added spice, the added garage on either side with a hallway. Then a extension was built upwards going over everything. Bathrooms normally have windows. The 5 in this building do not.

I'll look into a small filter and advise of what kind
KingofBones1 · 46-50, M
@TeaUrchin look into things like Sharper Image and Bushnell they make good ones they are a little pricey but they usually work fairly decent that is definitely a different house indeed
TeaUrchin · F
I found a vent fan that has a cdr of 150. Super powerful.

I am researching filters but i need an extra plug

Thanks all for your support

I’d look into getting a good ionic air purifier.
Softandsweet2 · 31-35, F

where its the warmer months now can he set up a window fan somewhere theres a window and blow the smoke out of it like sitting in front of it?
Bowenw · 61-69, M
You may be able to use a high quality air filter.
Bowenw · 61-69, M
@TeaUrchin I understand. I'm afraid I cannot see where that recommended one is made.
TeaUrchin · F
@Bowenw no worries, ill trace it. This is a good start

@TeaUrchin Check out this site:
https://madeinca.ca/the-10-best-air-purifiers-in-canada-for-2025/
The manufacturer of the one that is highly recommended has others that show as made in Canada, so they may all be.

An inexpensive air filter can be made with a standard box fan an an appropriate-size HEPA filter that can be bought at a hardware store.
TeaUrchin · F
@ChipmunkErnie thank you. I research this. I need electrical work to plug in
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
@TeaUrchin Just a regular wall plug.
GuyWithOpinions · 31-35, M
Every bathroom has a window? Isnt that s fire code law?
TeaUrchin · F
@GuyWithOpinions yes of course. It isnt called a bedroom if it lacks a window.
GuyWithOpinions · 31-35, M
Put a fan in the window to suck the air out
TeaUrchin · F
@GuyWithOpinions grest idea if there was a window

@Wiseacre He is showing signs of dementia. We watch both of them closely. Their kitchen is dismantled, the power tools are all put away (i think he would fall over as he is weak).

This smoking thing is something that is discussed constantly with his doctors. Im convinced one started smoking after his romantic explanation of his relationship with cigarettes.
Wiseacre · F
@TeaUrchin Sounds like dementia..what would happen if u took away his smokes? He may set the house on fire,uk!
TeaUrchin · F
@Wiseacre He works the Geriatric doctors. He is at 2-3 stage vascular dementia. He is in decent shape and my husband and I monitor him closely.

To take away his cigarettes would make him suicidal. I truly believe this. It is the one thing he can control in his life, besides a tiny piece of old cheese.
