I Think Marijuana Should Be Legalized

Even though I hate the smell (doesn't stop the odd experience though ;) ), I see no reason why it shouldn't be legal.

Yes there are side-effects to misuse and they shouldn't be forgotten. But as far as I can see every argument that is used to justify criminalising cannabis also applies even more strongly to alcohol. More than anything, I oppose the inconsistency and I suspect the reasons why it is illegal are (1) we just happened to have widespread use of tobacco first, and (2) when laws were passed against it, politicians simply didn't like the sort of people they assumed used it, and found them disgusting.

Whichever case, they're still pretty weak reasons for not legalising.

How is it good for society for people to get high?
SW-User
@marciamom beats drinking any day of the week

I will tell you a way in which it doesn't: There are work places where it is totally ok to be "a little high" when you work. Yet here in the US, we have pretty much zero tolerance for people who come to work drunk. Also, we have science to measure how much alcohol is in your blood. But how many tokes before you are beyond the limit? we have none of that

@marciamom I don't live in the US and never have; I've worked in places where drinking at lunch was perfectly normal and people did it every day, and everywhere I've ever worked was okay with Friday beer and Christmas liquor. "Zero tolerance" is an American concept.

The police in Canada are trialing cannabis saliva tests right now, and limits have been set (don't ask me the process by which they arrived at this limit, though). If anything, it will reduce the number of people driving while high.

30% of the population smokes weed here. They're already getting high, the difference is that now they're not supporting crime syndicates or having their lives ruined with criminal records they don't deserve. And they're paying taxes.

The frak kind of argument is that? Who cares if you can measure it?

Because there is no way for someone to decide whether or not he can drive. For alcohol, you can say "one drink" keeps you under the limit. But it is the wild west as far as weed goes. Different strengths, different forms.

@MarmeeMarch Right - and really, what is the argument that it is good??

@marciamom What does that have to do with it being legal? You can't test for it whether it is legal or illegal.

Like I said in a previous response - I would rather my doctor was a drunk. Because he would instantly get fired for showing up to surgery drunk. But if he was a pot head, he might show up to surgery high and be surrounded by "hey - chill out" people who find that endearing

@marciamom it's not the wild west here anymore, here's a screenshot from the NSLC weed page

@SW-User It shouldn't be legal because it is likely to do dramatic harm to society. Places where it became legal have reduced income and productivity and higher incidence of traffic fatality. And no one has said how it is good. How is it good? Don't tell me it helps rheumatoid arthritis - I am not talking about medicinal.

@marciamom So all that nonsense about testing you no longer think is true then or what?

@MarmeeMarch Have you ever been right about anything before? Seriously, everything you say is either terrible or stupid.
marciamom · F
You are arguing like someone who smokes. Can't follow one line to the next. Testing is vital; if you could argue that it is like alcohol and there is a small measurable amount that a person could use, have benefit, and not risk people's lives, that would be one thing. But there is no measure and therefore, there is only risk. Read this after you have come down and you might get it.
SW-User
@marciamom in that case, it would make sense to outlaw alcohol, and we all know how that went

@marciamom Holy shit dude.

[big]WHY DO YOU THINK THAT TESTING IS VITAL?[/big]

You keep saying this but don't explain why. Who the frak cares?

@MarmeeMarch How does it being legal or illegal change that?

@SW-User you can't expect a lot more from someone who sexualizes child abuse
