I Think Marijuana Should Be Legalized

Even though I hate the smell (doesn't stop the odd experience though ;) ), I see no reason why it shouldn't be legal.

Yes there are side-effects to misuse and they shouldn't be forgotten. But as far as I can see every argument that is used to justify criminalising cannabis also applies even more strongly to alcohol. More than anything, I oppose the inconsistency and I suspect the reasons why it is illegal are (1) we just happened to have widespread use of tobacco first, and (2) when laws were passed against it, politicians simply didn't like the sort of people they assumed used it, and found them disgusting.

Whichever case, they're still pretty weak reasons for not legalising.

it is legal here in Canada ,,, but still less expensive to get it the old way ,,,

Agree with you. I think it’s because they can’t tax it as easily as booze.
I often think that a stoned person never vandalises a phone box, gets violent or wakes up feeling like shit after a good night.

You're exactly right. Especially when you can also add in the fact that it really does help people to deal with pains and anxieties

I’m not sure, I dated a girl who smoked it and it kind of scared me, she took other drugs too.

Has it been over 4 years now since this last post? 🙀 Have your opinions changed at all in this time?
MrAverage1965 · 61-69, M
It's hard to disagree as you say there are so many inconsistencies.
There is an argument to legalise all drugs.

If you posted an update to this (almost 4 years later now), would it receive even more comments?

@marciamom When I volunteered in prisons in the UK a couple of years back they used urine tests on inmates suspected of drug use or those wishing to enter the recovery programmes I was helping run - under UK law they have to consent to the test. Anyway we could detect a bunch of stuff and cannabis had a level rating I know it did, same as opioids So I don't believe a level testing if legalised couldn't quickly be brought in. Of course like any testing it is flawed as there is always some form of false positive that will show up. One trick was to simply take an over the counter pain killer containing an opioid ask for the urine test get on the the recovery programme then not swallow the substitute and sell it back on the wing. I constantly argued for using liquid methadone they had to swallow rather the subutex tablets which they could fake swallowing.

To me the argument should be - should we outlaw alcohol or legalise other drugs. If alcohol was invented today it'd be a class A under UK legislation without a doubt. It causes the most harm full stop. In the UK 1 person a week dies from a heroin overdose, about 2 from substitutes they've been prescribed (there's an interesting debate!) and about 1 every 20 mins for the effects of alcohol. That's before you get into the social harm drinking causes through violence, relationship issues etc. etc.

There is an argument to say that all drug use should be legalised.
Clearly the current approach doesn't work.
look at what happened by making it illegal in the 30s (in the US)

organized crime used what it learned when alcohol was illegal and continued to make a fortune.

we made criminals out of people that are having essentially the same physical effects as someone that drinks.

it's stupid - I would have thought that the political leaders of my generation would have made it legal long ago and taxed it like alcohol and tobacco
Synyster · 51-55, M
It is now in Canada. Trudeau legalized it when he was stoned, wait!!! he's still stoned.😂

Only now as a prescription, can you get from a specialist, not even from your own doctors.
Thinking I may need to start investment in a UK marijuana company, there's money to be made!

@SW-User 40% of the world's cannabis made pharmaceuticals are actually made in the UK - we're one of the world leaders in it - just that until now they've never been approved for use in the UK - well technically they are as many have a EU wide approval but NICE refuse to put them on the NHS list of approved drugs.

There's many but i think it's more down to how it effects the voting populace. Most see reason in it but i think it's a political risk for people so they don't want to be the ones to say it and risk losing.
MrAverage1965 · 61-69, M
There is an argument to legalised many more drugs than just marijuana.
The current 'war on drugs' is clearly being lost.

If they are weak reasons are they reasons at all or are they merely closed minded opinions? Totally agree with you.
