I'd suggest that for the average person trying to lose a few pounds, a balanced diet watching, carbs and fats is they way to go.
However, if you have a lot to lose or just can't get those few last pounds to go away, with a doctor following you, I feel like they are safe... if you don't simply take the meds and continue eating as you usually do.
That's the thing with drugs to lose weight - some people tend to not correct their eating habits and rely on the drugs - not a healthy long term approach.

@Ontheroad thats the worry with these drugs - they're being used wrong already.
People are thinking they are this magic pill, (which they kinda are), but they arent educating themselves.
From what ive read, yeah they lose the weight, but nearly 40% of it can be muscle tissue !
Shit!
Muscle tissue is crucial tissue .
It BURNS fat within itself.
Lose that and you're WORSE OFF !

@OogieBoogie exactly I'd definitely be researching before taking anything

It doesn’t bother me that they exist. I know there’s misuse. If they’re used for diabetes, great. If they’re used for food noise, great. If they’re used for weight loss, great.
I don’t understand the people who say it’s an easy way out for weight loss. Why do they want it to be hard? I’m glad it’s working for the people who need it.

@itsok Yes, but it validates the 'in some instances' opinions that have been shared here.
itsok · 31-35, F
@NudasPriest i think there are always “in some instance” cases that ring true.
Like my original comment mentions there is misuse. There will be misuse with nearly everything, but I don’t feel it invalidates the help it brings to people.

@itsok i agree with that.
There are the cases of the placebo affect.
And it has a STRONG influence over people.
Ive even read in some medical journals that doctors consider it upto half the effect of a patients improvement ....not just the prescribed drug.
So when something works, and the patient believes in it so strongly... what is a doctor to do ?
A patient comes in believing whole heartedly in medication, wanting more medication..... what do you do?
You have no reason to shatter their belief, but also no hope in wanting any other solutions. 🫤

personally i think dnp is a much better fat loss drug. people are scared of it because people die from it but almost all deaths are people taking 2g+ in a day and thats WAY too much. the therapeutic index is actually better than tylenol on it, and low doses (125-250mg) are very well tolerated with barely any side effects. the side effects are basically you get hot and tired, and if one can handle those going higher is fine too. with my clients id let men go to 500mg and women to 250mg to be safe, but for most people 125-250mg is perfect.
it raises your metabolism by 10% for every 100mg so its insanely effective. it needs to be paired with a good diet and exercise plan (or just diet if the person cant exercise) but it doesnt block appetite so it forces you to change habits to see good results, and because the results are so good its highly motivating, so it makes it easier to change habits. you can always add in the ec (ephedrine and caffeine) stack to suppress appetite for part of the day to make it easier too, im a big fan of intermittent fasting combined with a protein shake and ec in the morning and a bigger meal or two at night.
the next most effective fat burner is t3, thyroid hormone, and that caps out at about 10%. clen, the next most effective after that, is closer to 5%. you can run all 3 together though and they synergize well, and t3 is very safe (the thyroid bounces back within a week or two even with people who were on it for years) but clen is a bit more risky, so i dont recommend it to the general population.

@OogieBoogie pilates lengthens your muscles and changes your shape! You don't need to lose weight just become more flexible. Strength and flexibility is the key
OogieBoogie · F
@loulou22 😂😂....the thing is, im hyper mobile, im already flexi - its a genetic thing.
I do need to lose weight tho 🫤 i was something like 25kg (55+lbs) over my medically prescribed weight.
Im getting there tho. Changing some to muscle 💪
Ive never done pilates. Always thought about doing a class tho🤔
I know its very good for your fascia and movement stability
You're right tho, strength and flexibility ARE key 👍

@OogieBoogie Get your thyroid checked.
And don't lose hope. I "just" (took a bit over a year) lost 106 lbs. I never thought I could lose weight, but it really WAS a question of input vs. output. It just took learning better. I think most of us who have/had this problem don't realize just how many calories a day we're eating.
If you're sitting over there thinking "I only eat 300 calories a day", make sure you're correct. Triple check yourself, and if that is truly the case, then again - get your thyroid checked out.

Diet and exercise are always going to be the healthiest option.
OogieBoogie · F
@Lostpoet Well they are definitely the first option i think people should take.
But from what ive read its a complex issue.
Some people are so big, or enflamed by their weight, (ie arthritis), that exercise is out.
And then there are those that DO do all that, and still cant lose the extra fat.
And ive found out, that like diabetes, for some people, being overweight is an inherited genetic disease that no diet or exercise program will fix.
So i think, like diabetes 2, if diet and exercise can't do it alone, then these are a great add on.
But i dont think they should be used as a magic bullet.

I resisted for a long time but when they came out with pill form, I tried it. I can control dosage better and take the smallest amount possible. At 70, it’s not as easy to lose weight no matter what you do. I’ve done my homework tho and must eat protein and exercise to retain muscle mass but can be done in a healthy manner.
OogieBoogie · F
@Handfull1 Nice to hear that someone has done their research on it.
Ive been looking into it. I've been on a health journey for about three years and have kinda reached a stand still for tje past year and a half.

Im strength training now, a few times a week....i ll see how it goes.

@OogieBoogie I can now get up from the floor with no hands. I’ve only lost 20 pounds but am short. I’ve deliberately done it very slowly so less side effects. There’s no shortage here and for seniors that qualify it’s $50 a month.
Good luck if you decide to use it!

Very slowly apparently is the best way....and to try and take the lowest dose that works.
From what i see here in Aus, its between 7$ and $700 here, depending upon type and wether one has diabetes or not.
Pretty pricey if you want it for weight loss 🫤

Most of those drugs were originally for diabetics, but happen to have the side effect of rapid weight loss. So the drug companies realized they could make a lot of money also selling it to those trying to lose weight. The question becomes whether or not the ingredients that treat non or badly functioning pancreases would harm healthy people using them long term.
bijouxbroussard · F
@OogieBoogie Not pancreatitis, but with diabetics the pancreas itself stops producing insulin effectively.

I think the majority of people probably don't need them. They might be a convenient replacement for proper diet and exercise, but could pose health risks along the way. But, like many other pharmaceuticals, there are some people who might truly need them. And, that's okay with me.

They seem to be helpful for people with long term and severe weight issues, or genetics that make weight an unusually challenging problem. But they are definitely being overused. I know so many people taking them as a short cut instead of eating healthier or living more actively. As well as those taking them to just drop 10-20 pounds.

@Harmonium1923 yeah....but then its not the first drug to be over used is it ?
People on blood pressure meds instead of getting healthy.
Viagra coz of the blood pressure meds🤷♀
Adhd drugs.
Even some early diagnosed diabetics could help themselves become non symptomatic if they cleaned up their food.
There seems a pill for nearly everything now.
I do understand that for many people they are crucial to living life.
But as you said......too many use them as a magic fix, while fixing nothing themselves.

I can imagine that if I were in a position of people who believe they need it, I would give it a chance if my doctor recommended it to me. But only after any other way failed.
My opinion is that it's a big risk, it hasn't been tested for a long time yet, it's still an experimental drug, there were really bad side effects recorded and Ozempic in particular smells absolutely vile. It smells like something you shouldn't even think of getting in your body.
Plus old people who take it don't look healthy in their face. I noticed how I actually have a problem to recognize my relatives when I see them from the distance because their basic physiognomy I was used to for years has changed so rapidly. And let's be honest, rapid and severe weight loss often isn't a good sign when it comes to health. It typically sends the signal "this person isn't healthy".
I wouldn't touch it unless I had a really bad health problems and it was presented to me by healthcare professionals as something that would significantly improve my life, prevent disseases that I would likely develop without the treatment or something like that.

I'm hoping to come off the meds if I can sustain safe levels on diet and exercise alone.

My doctor says they are dangerous. She said that IF you begin taking them, you will ALWAYS have to take them...otherwise you will gain that weight right back again. AND they became massively popular SO quickly that the long term side effects are unknown. What we DO know, with a lot of them, is that they can cause nausea, vomiting, severe upset stomach, diarrhea, and can adversely affect your gall bladder and your pancreas.
From a pharmacy with a doctor's prescription for a proper diagnosis it seems to work great. Ordering it on some random website yourself to lose some weight because it's easier than eating healthy and exercising? Bad idea...

@OogieBoogie on the bright side you're at a healthy weight and I'm sure it doesn't hurt your appearance. I understand wanting to cut a little. As I'm only a little overweight now I focus on body recomposition. that way I can workout and enjoy my carbs and snacks in peace. if I ever change my mind I can go back to counting cals.

I take Ozempic for my blood sugar. It dropped my A1C number from 10 to 6. I personally think it rocks!

I think it's just another way for Americans to not exercise.

@Atari2678 well health is why these glp 1"s came about.
Obesity is at an all time high.
They now realize that excess fat works like an inflammatory disease. It affects so much of the body.....its not just this stuff we have extra of, its creating a flow on affect of diabetes, arthritis, coronary heart disease, hormone disregulation....its a huge list.
Before now, we didn't know they, and obesity were connected 🤷♀

@OogieBoogie just another drug to fix issues and make new ones
Sounds like a short cut to me. Not in all cases, but many.

@NudasPriest Its been an interesting deep dive.
I never would have believed it but, apparently being fat, (for some people), is a genetic disease. (Its complex).
But some people, despite eating clean and doing the exercise an shit, their bodies just won't lose the extra fat.
So....for them i think its great. They are doing the work, and the glp is tipping thier chemistry over into working for them.
BUUUUT....ugh, the stories and excuses and DOSES some people share ....its depressing.
Some do nothing - and expect the drug to do it all. Amd they complaim that they feel sick wjen they eat take away .
I mean...WTF !
... why are they STILL eating junk ?!
Im torn.
I think its an amazing breakthrough.... but i also think its being abused.
