Why drug addiction ruins people's lives...

...a recent study has shown that dopamine affects the choices we make. (well duh🙄)

The greater the expected dopamine from any activity ....the more we desire to do it ....makes sense .
A finch will choose courting over quenching thirst or eating if the opportunity arises .

Same with humans.

But the drive from dopamine from a 'hit' or expected hit, (or drink or session or purchase or whatever... etc), can be SO STRONG it can override basic needs such as hunger, thirst, work and relationships.

Basically - un natural dopamine levels from drugs, (or any addiction whether it be gambling, shopping or whatever), override our natural ablitiy to differentiate needs.
- Even drop some needs altogether....they just don't register enough dopamine to be considered personallly important🤷‍♀

And it's why ex addicts have trouble 'feeling' when they quit. Normal dopamine levels just don't cut it like they used to ....so nothing seems desirable any more: not food, not drink, not even love .

And it's why loving an ex addict is so hard . Their dopamine levels have been so numbed over, it takes high amounts for them to register want or desire.

Sorry .... just found it interesting 🤷‍♀

Edit: the good news is, (with the exclusion of some of the newer synthetic drugs), this state is usually repairable over time .

But it can take years for an addictcs body to get jack to normal fuction ....or close to.
And requires dedication.

I'm more concerned with the lives of their innocent victims than with anything that happens to drug addicts.

@HobNoblin i think you are seeing this from a drug only perspective.
I went on to talk about ALL addicts .

People csn be addicted to reading, watching movies, laziness, shopping , working out, vanity......some mask as 'collectors'. I mean - we all know what a hoarder is.

These addictions can also ruin families, children and spouses lives....as well as the addict .

Understanding addiction gives us tje knowledge to realize that many addicts are a victim to themselves ...
...or worse, a victim to the trauma or circumstance that put them in such a place that they became one:

- Daddys lil princess becomes addicted to shopping because that's what Daddy did - he bought her stuff when she was sad or angry.

- The skinny little runt of the highschool class becomes a body builder and addicted to working out so much - he has no time for anyone else in his life .

- chubby Debbie just can't lose that weight - steals her bothers adhd meds to curb her eating.....next its amphetamines. And shes not rich like Jane Fonda to go to rehab.

- john is given pain meds after a car crash - its a spiral downwards .

Mac starts going to the bar with the boys after work to blend in .....

- some are just born poor..... with nothing - and everyone around them does it.

Addiction has so many complex root causes.
- youde be suprised how many people are addicts to something .....even defenseive emotional states like sarcasm or apathy .
These too can destroy a person's life .

@HobNoblin Actually, giving out clean needles hasnt turned other countries into narco states - its proven to reduce HIV and Hep C and needle rooms have kept the used needles off the streets.

And i can tell you for a fact that familes habe been fractured by a parent addicted to working out, families been sent into poverty and lost homes over gambling or shopping addiction.

You see only one side of this - the street drug side - i think youre unaware of how addiction to even thr most socially accepted things, destroys lives .

You only need to look at cults.

@OogieBoogie Clean Needle Programs are all about harm minimisation and do way more good than harm. Users and addicts using these services are less likely to be a public nuisance. Not many people understand the need for such programs. They save the health system money otherwise they would not be publicly funded.
@HobNoblin How do you treat people that are flying under the radar of social acceptance ?
How do you find and register a shopaholic? a control freak?....an habitual online gamer ?

Assuming jist coz someone is a drug addict - that they are also a murderer, is the same as saying 'guns kill people ' - 'therefore everyone who owns a gun should be arrested'

One doesn't automatically equate to another.

@KiwiBird A big reservation sounds better. They all go in no drugs allowed. The ones that are healthy enough do the work, farming, maintaining etc. Regular drug tests. If you consistently test free of smuggeled in drugs after so long you can get out on parole. Stay clean and you can stay out. Its a lot nicer than prison, there are houses offices, farms machine shops. Just within a certian aria.

@OogieBoogie Shopping addicts wouldn't be under the radar of social acceptance if they committed the crime drug addicts do.
@HobNoblin Are you sure ?
what happens if that crime happens at home?....what if the money they steal is the money for the mortgage ?....for the groceries?...money that should have paid for doctors and theres medical neglect ?
- that the fear and violence is domestic?
- that the lives they wreck is their childrens and spouse ?
...again ....read the post .....read what addiction does.

Addiction does things to people that even addicts cant believe - and then they do things to the ones they love that are unbelievable.

We all read about the obvious affects in society - we rarely hear about the covert stuff going on behind closed doors.
HobNoblin · 36-40, M
@OogieBoogie Then if they get caught ,they get locked up too. Sooner or later it'll happen.
@HobNoblin the point is.....they dont grt caught .

Thats what 'flying under the radar" means: no one knows.
Thr addicts victims get gaslit or threatened or feel powerless or too scared to tell.
HobNoblin · 36-40, M
@OogieBoogie That kind of situation happenes for a lot of reasons. It's just something science and the law will have to catch up to. However, we can catch junkies who act out and we surely should.
@HobNoblin you've never really been exposed to this have you .... like front line, perosnally ?

@OogieBoogie Grew up in slums surrounded by this filth.
