Making a lot of stuff from scratch lately with the increase in grocery prices

My sons chicken nuggets are like nine dollars

I Buy 9 chicken breasts for that same price and can make whatever I want. I can make chicken nuggets, boneless chicken wings, chicken curry, chicken and rice, chicken tacos, enchiladas or even chicken salad

It’s wild how much some stuff has gone up. My son likes sweet potato Dinosaurs and fries but sweet potatoes “already made” are so unaffordable

There are still a few things that you can buy frozen that cost less than making at home like pizza for example. My son LOVES pizza.

I can buy the potatoes for like three dollars and make 5 times as much comes in that one bag

I stopped going out for coffee altogether. Coffee costs almost $5-6 dollars it used to cost around $2

It’s ridiculous I make matcha tea and coffee at home I even froth the milk. I put it in a jar and shake it up until it becomes foam. I try to replicate whatever it is I go out for at home to avoid the temptation

I used to go out to eat as a hobby I really liked going to different restaurants and trying new things. Phew that went out the window 😂😂

Oh well I really enjoy cooking and I’m enjoying learning all these new recipes

My country ability of making everything from scratch is finally coming in handy. When I first moved to Florida when I was really poor I was making homemade bread because bread was like $5 and I literally couldn’t afford that. Thank god I found $1< bread at aldi because baking bread is a lot of work and you don’t even want to eat it hardly because it’s so much work goes into making it🤣🤣🤣 at least for people who don’t own bread makers

Did I ever tell you I know how to make homemade baby wipes? I can make toothpaste. I know what things you can substitute for other things. You can use cornstarch as anti-perspirant if you can’t afford deodorant. You can use shampoo and conditioner as laundry detergent if you can’t afford laundry detergent

I used to use my mascara as eyeliner and use my eyeshadow for blush and contour

Me personally ?
When life gives you lemons figure out how many different ways you can get use out of them lol

Lemonade, lemon water, bleach (lemons are a natural bleach) mix lemon and baking soda to whiten your teeth (don’t do this a lot tho it erodes the enamel)

😝 I could write a book seriously

You're someone everyone will cling to during a zombie apocalypse with your survival skills. 👀
Classified · M
@DeluxedEdition Those are very handy skills though, lots of people don't have them.
PatKirby · M
@DeluxedEdition

Yeah, you're the kind of mom who when the cupboard's bare you still find a way to make soup and veggies. I admire that.
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@PatKirby why thank you 🌺
No doubt your hints have inspired people.
I’m a BOGOF. 2 for 1, manager specials, reduced priced items, reduced prices on meat, poultry, pork( be careful too. If it’s giving off any even the slightest odor, don’t buy it.) person. I buy dry goods like rice, pasta and buy bouillon your make soup/ sauce bases. I stopped buying regular liquid milk. Now I use powdered. A little pricy but will outlast a quart of milk.
I often buy soup greens, add some, not all the greens to a pot of water w/ a bouillon cubes. Might throw some meat or chicken or pork in the mix and might throw in some rice ( I use brown) or orzo.
Split peas are great too for soups. Dried beans are probably less expensive than canned and won’t get used up right away.

And yes pen your thoughts and ideas. Try and get some images of your results.

Again, good pointers.

@soar2newhighs thank you for saying that 🌺🤗

Welcome to my life lol

Not really for economic reasons (at least so far), but mostly because I'd rather make my stuff from scratch the way I like it rather than rely on prepackaged industrial sh*t. Let's be honest, the chicken made at home tastes infinitely superior to that dry cr#p they sell at the supermarket.
Elessar · 26-30, M
@DeluxedEdition Or, wait, they actually sell it *raw* with fillers inside to make it look bigger? How is that even legal?
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@Elessar there’s a lot of stuff about American food that should be reconsidered by the fda. Things like preservatives and fillers and certain things that they use for pesticides cause cancer 🤦‍♀️ that red 40# dye that they put in stuff is so bad for us too

A lot of people don’t know this but the FDA doesn’t even regulate our vitamins. Which means the percentages on the vitamins may or may not be accurate.
Elessar · 26-30, M
@DeluxedEdition It's one of the things I like better about here (and not saying that one place is better than the other, there's things that are genuinely better here and things that you guys are one century ahead of us), food/drugs regulation is definitely one area where we have few rivals. We have a lot more additives/substances bans as far as I know due to a proactive attitude of the regulator (i.e. things may get banned even if it's not yet fully proven they may be harmful), as opposed to the USA's more "reactive" approach.
Jenny1234 · 51-55, F
you can buy 9 chicken breasts for $9???????????? boneless? I don't usually see even 5 for less than $20.

I too used to make my own baby wipes. You can also use a lime for deoderant. works great
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@Jenny1234 that is so interesting I will have to try that I love limes I like to cook and make limeade I’m sure I have some around here somewhere
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@Jenny1234 did it actually work preventing freckles,???
Jenny1234 · 51-55, F
Home cooked meals are much healthier when they're not prepackaged and have fresh ingredients.
Anymore, they also taste better than the waaaay overpriced restaurant meals.
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@MoonlightLullaby I swear to God restaurants don’t season anything anymore
@DeluxedEdition I used to love going out to eat and now I prefer the crockpot, air fryer and especially the grill.😋

My taste buds hate trying to make a choice in the restaurant dilemmas. 😝
PatKirby · M
@MoonlightLullaby

Any good recipes for the crockpot lately? I did the nacho thing recently, it was pretty good.
dale74 · M
I know what you mean my daughter who is 8 is now eating so much and is so active in school i hardly have time to cook.
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@dale74 when I’m short for time I “meal prep” I cook for the entire week all in one day and put it all in the freezer
PatKirby · M
@DeluxedEdition

Do you bring it down into the fridge the night before?
Pfuzylogic · M
Everyone has a job now and Take puts feel they need to compensate for those early covid years.
Price gouging is a shame.
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@Pfuzylogic exactly greedy fvvks
Pfuzylogic · M
@DeluxedEdition
They are doing at the gas pump to exploit the conflict in the Ukraine also…shameless really.
PatKirby · M
Up until very recently I would buy a 3lb bag of boneless chicken for about $6. Suddenly it's now almost $12. Wtf?
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@PatKirby everything has doubled it feels like
PatKirby · M
@DeluxedEdition
I got the same feeling from way back in 2008 at the butcher's dept. noticing how super high Ribeyes suddenly were, and realizing I could no longer BBQ them each week. Now it's hit plain old chicken.
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
If you buy enough maybe you should shop at Sam’s club
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@MrBrownstone I shop at Sam’s for the dry stuff and for home stuff like deodorant, soap, razors, floss etc

I don’t really like their food that they have their selection is terrible in my opinion
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@MrBrownstone We just got a BJ’s wholesale that just opened up I heard it was really good I’m looking forward to trying it out
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
@DeluxedEdition I can’t take that store seriously
dale74 · M
Burger King still selling "chicken nuggets " 10 for 1.99 makes me question what is really in them.
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@dale74 no for real. Raccoon ankles
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
Jacks pizzas are cheap
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
@DeluxedEdition My grocery store has box pasta for $1.50. Fuck it
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@MrBrownstone aldi has pasta in small bags for 30 cents!!!!!!
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
I bet it is way nicer as well.
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@Ozymandiaz much fresher and you know there aren’t weird chemicals in it 😊
FreestyleArt · 31-35, M
9.00 is not bad. Here in Cali... depending the location it can differ 11.00 to 18.00.

Ours here is like 5 something for 15 Pieces
Spumoni · 46-50, M
Chicken went up quite a lot here. Thighs very little, so I buy those. They cook well and taste great.
Briggett · T
Probably the best thing to come out the past few years is learning to cook your own favorite things.
Kinkyvisions · 41-45, M
You are a true innovator and survivor! Hats off to you!
TheLordOfHell · 41-45
Haha you probably could write a book. Someone sure needs to
TheLordOfHell · 41-45
@DeluxedEdition Damn girl, you are a true survivor
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@TheLordOfHell I owe a lot of thanks to the dollar tree for being a real one 🤣
TheLordOfHell · 41-45
@DeluxedEdition Hey those places come in handy
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
You are very resourceful which is awesome.

I wish I could get chicken breasts that cheap here though. A package of 5 fresh is $20.
@iamonfire696 There might be a somewhat lower price, say if you buy chicken breasts, bone in, skin on . I’ve found they are less in price.
And that skin and those bones make for great stock.
