furnished a whole house from thrift stores, garage sales or Habitat for Humanity Restores

Whole set of kitchen cupboards for $2000, reduced from $2500 when we originally saw them
Orca4950 · 70-79, M
@akindheart check out habitat for humanity restore near you or some other 2nd hand building product store
akindheart · 61-69, F
@Orca4950 we have one not far from me. like i said, i have donated a lot to them but never bought anything. what is weird, i wanted to donate a sofa and loveseat and they don't take prints or patterns..
Orca4950 · 70-79, M
@akindheart during covid they handled donations with an email and pictures etc.. that totally contols what they take in. Try your local Sally Ann

Heartlander · 80-89, M
I don't think I've purchased clothes items over the past 10 years, but the last time I donated to a thrift store I looked around and would have no problem shopping there. Other than clothes, I'm pretty focused on what I need at the moment and won't waste time rummaging through thrift stores. One exception was a thrift office furniture and equipment outlet that recycled discarded office furniture from government offices. High quality office furnishings at 90% less than retail, easily made good as new with a 2 dollar can of metal spray enamel.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@Heartlander i wish we had a place like that. we do have county resale shops too but i never make it over there
Heartlander · 80-89, M
@akindheart I'm reminded that our county has a program to recycle unused paint. Bring your old paint remnants and the county would just mix the type paints together and whatever color the results was suitable for painting something that color wasn't important anyway. The only problem was that you had to make an appointment to turn in your old paint.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@Heartlander we have that too. but the county makes it into pastels and you can choose which one you want. the paint is awesome. i donate all the time
AbbeyRhode · F
Always have, still do. It makes no sense to pay more for something than I have to.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@AbbeyRhode you must find good stuff.
AbbeyRhode · F
@akindheart I do, especially since I am not impressed by material objects, overpriced name brands, or pretentious designer labels. I look at price and quality.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
I occasionally use charity-shops (run to support a charity, not as a charity itself), and sometimes cut-price chains like Poundland, Aldi and Lidl.

I don't know if either of those are the same thing as the American thrift-store.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@ArishMell we have Aldi's over here now. and our charity/thrift stores depend on what area they are in. some can be very pricey
Iwillwait · M
@ArishMell We "U.S.A.," have independently owned Thrift Stores that are typically tied to a specific Charity or Church where the proceeds go to fund, their Organizations. One thrift store I frequent funds a Food Shelf (which gives food to those who need it's like a grocery store), the other I frequent funds homelessness and Veterans dental.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@Iwillwait Ah, similar idea then.

Churches here don't have high-street shops as such, though some cathedrals have full cafeterias within their buildings. Their local fund-raising is by donations and bequests, and by hosting events such as concerts and organ-recitals in the church itself, using the church hall for their own events (coffee mornings are a popular one) or letting it out to other community voluntary organisations; and in Summer, many hold an Annual Fete, usually in the church grounds.

This sort of fund-raising is not usually for the institution as such, not for the major sects anyway, as they have large national investment plans; but very often is for repairs and maintenance of buildings that can be anything up to about 900 years old. Or for overhauling the organ or the bells.

.......

Sometimes the supermarkets here have an equivalent to the 'Food Shelf', stocked by donations from customers or staff. I think this food goes to the more formal "food banks" for needy people, run by volunteers.
ArtieKat · M
All the time! I've bought some fabulous designer overcoats (for example) for less than £10. I also buy from Vinted, the clothes app in Europe and North America.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@ArtieKat you have to know what you are looking for right? they had a designer section but no one was buying from that end. they had all kinds of high end shoes too
ArtieKat · M
@akindheart I sometimes just buy things on the spur of the moment if I'm scrolling through and see something which appeals to me.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@ArtieKat you are lucky. i was lucky to find the RL shirts. they were buy 1 get 1 free. this lady at the sale tried to take a dress from my hands. no lie.
jim44444 · 70-79, M
Not so much the thrift stores but i do hit the second hand/antique stores for old tools and furniture that can be restored and resold.
jim44444 · 70-79, M
@akindheart I was reading an article yesterday about the throwaway furniture of today. Something like 70% of furniture ends up in a landfill. Most of what is sold (including high end) is made of manufactured wood with vinyl overlay. Nearly worthless to repair.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@jim44444 i had these chairs that a neighbor threw away. they would have been pretty to recover and paint but i couldn't use them and i was not sure i could sell them so i donated them. everything is throw away
SW-User
@jim44444 Same. I practically furnished my whole house from barn sales and antiques malls.
DearAmbellina2113 · 41-45, F
I have before and would again, but I always clean the items I buy- both physically and spiritually- before using them. I don't wanna bring anybody's bad energy into my house.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@DearAmbellina2113 good idea!
SlaveEt · 36-40, F
Of course, for many reasons. Smart people love a good deal😉
SlaveEt · 36-40, F
@Heartlander
Most folks who actually have money you'd never guess cause they spend wisely. It's the ones with flashy cars and jewelry hanging everywhere that are in debt up to their eyeballs trying to be what they are not, lol.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@Heartlander i love aldi's...
Heartlander · 80-89, M
@SlaveEt yes, plus a recognition of value they get for their money. Whether it's a head of lettuce or a million dollar home, they shop for value, getting their money's worth.
ravenwind43 · 51-55, F
All the time yep! Have found amazing things and great deals over the years.
ravenwind43 · 51-55, F
@akindheart The Goodwill here has gone up price wise, esp in the past several years as well. I try to stick to the half off color days.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@ravenwind43 i saw those on youtube. half off color days.
ravenwind43 · 51-55, F
@akindheart I went this weekend and lucked out to find 4 out of my 8 items were on the half off. Sometimes nothing you want is half lol
Muthafukajones · 46-50, M
I like to buy old textbooks there. A gf of mine teased me about spending 5 dollars on a book… until she found out it was worth $200
akindheart · 61-69, F
@Muthafukajones you got the last laugh!
I love going thrift store shopping. I have a bunch of stuff in my house from thrift stores/goodwills, they sometimes have great finds.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@MyMonstersAreReal another man's throw away is someone's treasures right?
Ramon67 · 61-69, M
I don’t have any problem shopping at a thrift store
akindheart · 61-69, F
@Ramon67 foujnd any treasures?
Ramon67 · 61-69, M
@akindheart I bought a replica of a WW2 diving helmet .
akindheart · 61-69, F
@Ramon67 whoa...awesome
SmoothKnight · 51-55, M
I love shopping at those places.
SmoothKnight · 51-55, M
@akindheart

Even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in awhile 😋
akindheart · 61-69, F
@SmoothKnight LOL. i love that!!!
SmoothKnight · 51-55, M
@akindheart

🐿️ 😋
sciguy18 · M
I bought a steam iron for $3.99...
akindheart · 61-69, F
@sciguy18 i love to iron! good for you
Crazywaterspring · 61-69, M
Yes. My rule is to never pay more than sales tax for a similar item new. Garage sales can be awesome.
Crazywaterspring · 61-69, M
@akindheart eBay and FB marketplace. Or a garage sale with things priced at a dollar or less.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@Crazywaterspring i have pulled out piles of stuff. it is all in piles at the moment but ready to sale. i set up a poshmark account for clothing but i have been gone so much, i haven't had time to do anything. I am selling my work clothes too
Crazywaterspring · 61-69, M
@akindheart Work clothes? Your retirement is a glow on the horizon.
Lilred2289 · 31-35, F
Nice! I keep hearing friends say they find good stuff in those places sometimes but I keep wondering if I’d lose patience looking for like one good thing.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@Lilred2289 i guess you have to search. i don't need anything so i don't go shopping there
Heartlander · 80-89, M
@Lilred2289 You can probably make it easier by shopping at thrift/consignment places that specialize. Like some specialize in furniture, some in construction materials, toys, etc. Also, thrift shops that are attached to churches have the best clothes choices. When we donate clothes to Catholic Charities I tend to look around and have to fight off the temptation to buy something. Duhhh... the old clothes there probably come from my fellow parishioners.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
I have in the past. You can get some real bargains and good brands if you know where to shop.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@cherokeepatti i saw that people were buying fabric at Goodwill. i quilt...i was donating quite a bit but people were leaving stuff outside the store and it was a big mess. then they stopped taking books around my house.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@akindheart I donate my stuff to a local thrift shop. It’s a couple that owns it and they have another store on the other side of the city too. They do local charity too so I feel better for that
akindheart · 61-69, F
@cherokeepatti i support so many charities. all of my dress clothes go to Dress for Success. all of my household things go to Goodwill and my furniture goes to a place that helps drug addicts.
FreestyleArt · 31-35, M
Barely...if something I really need like a Folding Table for 5 Bucks and works great. As for Devices of any such....forget it. Although Accessories are important for any owner's Devices.
Canuckle · 51-55, M
I know where all the thrift stores are in my area. I regularly look for great deals. Glad you found yours.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@Canuckle we have a lot. i don't shop there but i do donate lots to them
JohnnyNoir · 56-60, M
Thrift stores have some fantastic deals if you know what you're looking for
akindheart · 61-69, F
@JohnnyNoir i saw on youtube that people buy clothes to make quilts out of them
GJOFJ3 · 61-69, M
I have shopped thrift stores and Goodwill many times
akindheart · 61-69, F
@GJOFJ3 i can honestly say that i haven't. but i donate lots!
akindheart · 61-69, F
@Iwillwait tell me what you found. any treasures?
Iwillwait · M
@akindheart I have had a few good finds, like nice vases, most of my work attire is from thrift stores.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@Iwillwait i have purchased a few things but i am very petite. hard to find my sizes.
SW-User
Yes and yes
akindheart · 61-69, F
@SW-User tell me your best find
HumanEarth · 56-60, F
All the time
Azlotto · M
I do and found a lot of great deals.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@Azlotto good for you!!
robertsnj · 56-60, M
Not that often but sometimes I will poke into one because of the unique and unusual things you can find at some of them.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@robertsnj i bet!!
Elanor · F
Is a thrift store another name for a ‘charity’ shop 🤔

If so yes I’ve popped into them before and picked up something mostly to donate to the cause like the ‘heart foundation’
Orca4950 · 70-79, M
@Elanor yes, thrift store is north American to the British term Charity Shop
Elanor · F
Ah .. ty 🧏🏻‍♀️@Orca4950
akindheart · 61-69, F
@Elanor yep, one in the same!
DDonde · 31-35, M
I like them. I don't go to them often though cause there aren't many around here.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@DDonde we havea ton here but i don't need anything and i have run out of space
