@bluegrasslover Old paintings show tights, or at least something similar to modern leggings, were common especially in the Middle Ages to Renaissance times; in Europe at least.
The earlier ones were usually accompanied by a tunic, a sort of shirt-cum-jacket, with its hem outside and reaching the upper thighs.
Trousers as such - the looser-fitting garment - seemed to start appearing in the 16C or early-17C; and for the wealthy Tudors, were often rather flamboyant. One 17C fashion for men looked like breeches with tight ankles and padded thighs.
So perhaps tight leggings rather than "tights", were definitely male garments for a long time,
For all these centuries, I don't think women wore tights or stockings - or any underwear, usually - under their floor-length skirts.

Not for me but I wear leggings in the winter. It started out just for my morning run but they're an all day thing when the weather gets colder. I work from home so only put on regular clothes for grocery shopping day. And my wife loves it because it's less laundry than a pile of jeans.

@wildbill83 It doesn't always have to be about femininity. I developed a fetish for tights as a young boy and for me it's about the nice feeling and enjoyment of wearing them. I have no desire to cross dress at all but because I do wear them it doesn't take away any masculinity from me.
