The key to your problem is the phrase "watch less news". News reels before the main feature in theater disappeared long ago and was pretty close to the last time you could "watch the news". What TV and the Internet provide are opinion and entertainment.
But finding news to read is becoming a challenge since broadcast, cable, and the internet have stolen their product and advertisers, bankrupting many newspapers and shrinking space and staffing on the remaining. But giving up on gleaning the few kernels of news still remaining is like pursuing life's journey with a broken GPS and no map.
