Time looks very strange... when you miss so much of it.

I was recently looking into the past. People I once knew. Places I had once been.

It all looks so foreign now. So strange and discomforting. Where have I been while the world sped by?

There is no there there anymore, as Gertrude Stein put it. Interestingly enough, when I return to the city she grew up in -- Oakland, where I lived for 38 years -- so much has changed in so many different directions I understand what she meant. But when I go to the block I lived on, little has changed (other than the people residing there); an oasis of tranquility and charm in a strange new land. The opposite of her experience of returning to her childhood neighborhood, to which she was referring.

BTW, in Oakland's City Center there is a sculpture that simply states "There", in honor of Gertrude. A city whose gritty, self-deprecating view of its strengths and weaknesses always shines through even in the hardest of times.

Our perceptions of time have changed. The world has always changed throughout all history.

Yet it's us that has changed the most.

Life is change.

Wow, all that at the ripe old age of 22-25 years of age? Wow.

@FreddieUK Now I will definitely grant you that!

@WillaKissing take 10 of those years and isolate yourself from the entire world. Never going outside. Never seeing people you used to know.

Everything is just different to what i remember.

@PotatoSmasher1890 Yeah but having had a 27-year long career in the Army, and I have lived on a rural farm by myself outside of raising my kids. I cannot see how what you said to happen at your early age not even if you went to prison and were in solitary confinement.

Yes, everything changes that is the only concept the world runs off of.

So, may I ask how you were isolated for 10 years never seeing anyone?

As L.P. Hartley wrote, The past is a foreign country

@FreddieUK I've never heard of L.P Hartley. Have you any book recommendations?
FreddieUK · 70-79, M
@PotatoSmasher1890 It's a fairly well known quotation from The Go Between. Confession time...I've never read it.

The full quotation is The past is a foreign country, they do things differently there.

Knowing SW, a more learned person may be able to tell you more about Hartley. This book was made into a film in 1971
