I'm in your camp. The wars were horrendous but at least the facts were straight. Most of the time, anyway.

@Bumbles The country did, the people did not, for the most part; Mussolini was never too popular, I'd say around 30-40% at his peak (similarly to modern far right parties worldwide), registrations to his party ramped up just essentially because it had become sort of mandatory in order to exist in society, and every other party was banned. With time the majority that antagonized him became stronger and more willingly to fight back. But those who actually supported him never stopped, not even after his defeat.
