Those are called contrails. Short for "condensation trails", which form under certain conditions, when water (one of the byproducts of jet fuel combustion) condenses in cold air. This term has been around since the early days of commercial aviation.

I suspect someone heard a reference to "contrails", misheard it as "chemtrails", and the rest is history.
