I agree. I hate this stupid word. In England as a kid, I learned yum yum, which seemed and seems ok. But nom? Stupid

@bowman81 Wow!!
It originated on Sesame Street. Cookie Monster, when he is devouring cookies, makes that sound.
maskedbandit · 61-69, M
It was mistranslated from, 'if you eat this crap, it will turn your body numb numb'. You think I'm joking? 🤣
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@maskedbandit If there's a more compelling explanation, I'd like to hear it!
maskedbandit · 61-69, M
@uncalled4 All I know is when I was younger the adults would feed the babies and say, open wide, here comes the nom nom and the baby food and formular taste like crap. 🤷‍♂️ 🤣
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@maskedbandit Ah, ok. Some of this seems familiar.

Obviously someone was so annoyed with the nom nom sound they had to downvote this harmless post

@SW-User Someone with the true inability to experience joy. I hope I have been blocked by this bile-spewing individual. We're not curing cancer here.
Feels like a muppets thing…

I don't nom the answer
I don't know but if anyone makes sound while eating then I want to maintain minimum twenty feet distance 😁
meJess · F
It’s the sound of people eating with their mouth open.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@meJess It's a strange onomatopoeia.

I think it came from a comedy variety show like SNL, don't quote me though on that.
Some people trace it to the Cookie Monster

@ElwoodBlues Ah, ok

It's ridiculous

Not that I'm surprised, but some people clearly have not embraced my thread in the lighthearted manner in which it was authored.

It's a joke, son! 😃
First I heard of it was on icanhazcheezburger.com
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@ImperialAerosolKidFromEP Ah yes. That was the first site I would nom-nom-nom-nom-nominate. 😃
@ImperialAerosolKidFromEP Is that even still a thing???
Renaci · 36-40
Some people can make a similar sound while going Mmmmm... At the same time they are eating.
Onomatopoeias usually don't sound like they are spelled but are more just a name of the sound.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@Renaci True. I guess I was curious about the genesis of NOM. :)
Renaci · 36-40
@uncalled4 I came across something that said the word tummy might come from toddlers inability to pronounce stomach. So it comes like tumache - tummy. Lol I liked that explanation.
