It can be hard knowing what to share. Some people are receptive to it, some are sensitive and made uncomfortable. Everyone has different triggers and tolerances.
For me, I throw warning shots like. "I've been feeling down a bit, can I share?" Then after I have talked a bit, finalize my statement and say "And that's all. What do you think?" And then try not to keep explaining it.
People need to vent, it feels good. It's healthy. But continually expanding on what you have said when they respond can scare them into not talking about it anymore.
And also if you feel awkward, you can always try a new subject. "What game did you play recently?" If you ever wondered why adults ask "How is the weather?" It's because we are trying to become more comfortable by going to an easy subject. :/ Adults have the same issues.
