Smartphones have nerfed a generation

Over 1 million 16 to 24yr olds in the UK are not in work amidst a rising tide of depression, anxiety and other mental health issues with Smartphone use a key driving force behind those issues as well as sleep deprivation. This age bracket also often has no attention span and get bored after being in a job for a week so they leave.

Gas and oil prices continue to rise. A super El Niño is predicted to decimated global crops. War is everywhere, Ebola is spreading and your shoes don't go with your outfit.

I feel like you need to do something about the shoes 😒

I just want my no-show socks to stop sliding off my heel, man.

Great. So smartphones are going to become the latest "avocado toast" as a catch all explanation for why young people are wholly responsible for the challenges they face?

Plenty of older folk use smartphones poorly as well. But because they have assets and jobs that is fine with everyone.

Let us look at two decades of austerity and the continual prioritising of olser peoples demands over the basic needs of the young.

@SunshineGirl I’m not sure it’s a catch all. But it’s a viable explanation when it comes to the research. At least here in the US.

And yeah there are two sides to every story. I just know from experience that you’ll mostly see people of all ages gathered in their living room or dinner table, and they’re likely all on their phones.

@BillyMack I hate smartphones and their impact on human cognition and social interaction. But this applies to all levels of society. It's not fair to single out young people or suggest that youth unemployment - which is always higher than that of other age groups - is mainly their responsibility.

@SunshineGirl that wasn’t my intent, and I likely should have read the whole thing.

Our worry about my kids and younger generations. Because yes, we screwed up. So did other generations before us.

Add that the algorithmically curated social media sites and apps that are made to keep people’s attention spans… it’s certainly an issue. 😔
