Hometown Foods

I posted this a long time ago but we have a new crew so here goes:

I am going home for my high school reunion next year...(just work with me on that date) One of the things I love best about my hometown is the food.

My favorites? Mike Sell and Hussman potato chips, Kahn's hotdogs, Butternut bread and barqs cream soda which is red-i bring all of this home with me.

Restaurants? Frisch's with the hot fudge cake, a little restaurant called Hyde's and Millilo pizza cut in squares.

What are your favorite foods from home?

The best! I grew up in South Louisiana and bring back as much as I can safely carry.

Three or four Rouse's supermarkets within a stone throw from where I was born and easy enough to spend a day or two just roaming their stores and inhaling :)

@akindheart No, in Louisiana, locally more like a Louisiana incarnation of HEB that's so prominent in Texas. They fit the stores to the locations. So Louisiana Rouse's will carry more sausage brands than you can count. Fish, shellfish, alligator meat, crawfish, etc. Also practically every pepper and hot sauce that you can imagine. Tabasco and Trappey's are Louisiana companies but just the tips of the icebergs.

So going to a South Louisiana Rouse's is like going to a Border town HEB in Texas. The stores fit the people rather than the other way around :)

@Heartlander well i love all that food you listed. we don't have either down here
Heartlander · 80-89, M
@akindheart I don't know how far east they go. Mobile for sure, maybe panhandle Florida. West to Houston probably. Is Houston a Louisiana city? Somewhat :)
Mktonght · 61-69, M
Home is Findlay, Ohio. Dietsch Brothers candy and ice cream, and Wilsons hamburgers. YUM
akindheart · 61-69, F
@Mktonght how far is that from Cinci?
Mktonght · 61-69, M
@akindheart It is right up 75 about 160 miles.
I live now in Louisville KY.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@Mktonght ok...i confused that with Fremont. hey have you heard about the case of missing Andrea Knabel in Lousiville. i was just there btw. loved it
losthorizons · 51-55, M
What state is your hometown?
akindheart · 61-69, F
@losthorizons Cinci...
WillaKissing · 56-60
@losthorizons Cincinati, Ohio home of the Reds and Bengals and Bear Cats.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@WillaKissing YAY!!! love my Reds and that Joe Burrow guy
SW-User
From your area, Skyline Chili
akindheart · 61-69, F
@SW-User confession. i have only been to Skyline once. we also have Gold Star which is supposedly good
SW-User
@akindheart I've been to both and they are both good.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@SW-User we have this place in Cinci that is renowned for ribs. Montgomery Inn. i think i will upgrade to that this trip.
WillaKissing · 56-60
I know and love the brands! Oh, Mike Sell potato chips Yum!

From my old hometown that gets food critic visits and ratings online is "Little Sicily's Pizza" in Brice, Ohio.
From close to where I live now 28 miles away is close when you live rurally like I do is one of the best steak houses critic wise in Ohio it is called "The Scioto Ribber" in Portsmouth, Ohio.
Also, a Hometown favorite is "Cardos Pizza" 0r "The Pizza Cottage". Pickerington, Ohio.
Velvet Ice Cream company too! Utica, Ohio.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@WillaKissing ok we are going to one of those places when i come up
WillaKissing · 56-60
@akindheart Yes The Scioto Ribber. The others are all two-to-three-hour drives north of me.
Crazywaterspring · 61-69, M
I remember Frisch's from growing up in Flor-da. Friday AYCE fish.

HEB is awesome. It's a privately held company and Mr Butts pays his people decent wages and offers benefits like insurance.

If you ever make it to St Pete, nothing beats Ted Peters for smoked fish.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@Crazywaterspring yes and the Big Boys too. i haven't been over to the other coast in awhile. it is cheaper for me to travel to Europe than in the US (other than Florida)
Crazywaterspring · 61-69, M
@akindheart I live thirty minutes from DFW. Airlines gouge us to subsidize cheaper airfares in other domestic markets. International flights are about the same as domestic. Two added bonuses: certain foreign airlines tend to treat coach passengers decently and international passengers are sophisticated enough to behave on aircraft. Korean and Emirates are my favorite airlines.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@Crazywaterspring i havent flown either but egyptian air was the pits
GJOFJ3 · 61-69, M
Sounds like a fun trip. Enjoy
akindheart · 61-69, F
@GJOFJ3 thank you. i only make it home every 5 years..but this is my reunion
calicuz · 51-55, M

akindheart · 61-69, F

calicuz · 51-55, M
@akindheart

Yes, but I hear the sandwiches are not same.
akindheart · 61-69, F
