Korman said he based the character on one of his own grandmothers. I believe him... but... if you've ever seen It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World that character reminds me a LOT of Mrs. Marcus as portrayed by Ethel Merman.

@rinkydinkydoink I've heard of that, but haven't seen it, thanks!! It looks like a good way to spend a couple hours Criterion did a release of it I think so that's like a badge of honor.

One more bit of trivia and that's it (sorry!) - - the only living actor listed in the credits who is still alive is the dancer Barrie Chase. If you watch the movie, even the little boy is no longer with us.
