Do you ever lie to your family and/or thise around you about your eating/drinking habiits? [I Am Just Curious]

Since I'm a fat lady, I often get accused of bad eating habits, like drinking sodas every day. I've only drunk a few sips of soda at my 4th birthday party, didn't like it, so have never drunk the stuff. If I say, "But I don't drink soda!" they tell me, "That's what my sister used to say. Until my other sister found big boxes of soda hidden in her closet, and then she finally admitted to is she drank several bottles a day." I've heard these stories so much I've come to the conclusion that hiding foods and eating them secretly must be commonplace for some overweight people. Seems sad to me, pathetic, that anyone would feel so intimidated that they would hide food in a closet. I am wondering how common it is. I would never do anything like that, though some of the people I've talked to have convinced me they've had a relative do it. So, does anyone here have a story like that? Have you, or a relative, ever done anything like that? Or are you still doing it? What do you think would happen if you got caught? Wouldn't it be simpler to eat what you want without treating it like a CIA mission?

Well, in a way I do lie about soda. Or rather, my refrigerator lies about soda. See, I live in an area where soda is hard to come by, especially DIET soda since covid started. I only drink one diet soda a day. So I literally consume zero calories of soda in an entire year. But I've had girlfriends who open up my refrigerator and panic...
If you open up my fridge, you will see half of it is literally stuffed with diet soda. So to look at my fridge, you'd think I'd downing a 12-pack of diet soda every single day. But here's the deal. When I see diet soda available, I have to buy several 12-packs because it could literally be MONTHS before I'm able to buy any again. And I don't keep a lot of "food" in the fridge. Outside of the refrigerator, my kitchen doesn't have much for storage space. So I store months worth of soda in the fridge, for purely practical reasons. It's out of the way, and helps to keep the fridge cold, too.

When a new girlfriend opens the fridge, I get "lectured" over soda use. But what she's not seeing is that what's in there is probably enough to last me until next year...

@mikeylyksit I believe you but can understand that many people wouldn't. My theory is that fat people are seen as lacking self-control, thus having essentially bad character. Therefore it's assumed they must lie a lot as part of their bad character. Sounds like you and I have had a lot of useless anti-soda lectures.

@greenmountaingal Yeah, I'm a big guy (now, used to be very athletic in another life). I'm often out to eat with smaller size people. I will order something smaller and with less calories than people around me. Not because I'm trying to make a show of eating healthy. I'm generally eating small meals. Every meal. I'm averaging about 1800 calories a day, for years. The odd thing is, I've had rude people look at my small meal and comment that it's the reason I'm so big. And some of these people are sitting right next to me with 3,000 calories on their plate, NOT counting the six dinner rolls with butter that they scarfed up waiting for their 3,000 calorie meal to be served...

I think the issue you talk about is much more complicated than a perception that fat people are lacking self-control. In my experience, if a big guy is seen to be eating anything, even small portions of healthy food...

That is somehow seen as bad eating habits. If you are fat, then eating at all is perceived by those who are not fat, as being unhealthy. Sigh...

From the other perspective...
I once had a doctor tell me to stop eating. No qualifications. Just stop eating. He went on to explain, "I guarantee you that you won't starve to death". I followed his advice. Ate nothing for weeks. Lost many pounds. Gained it all back as soon as I resumed eating regular, small meals.

So are we literally not supposed to eat at all? I couldn't cut much more out of my diet and still have energy to work. So, ???

@mikeylyksit My theory, based on experience, is that if you are fat, there is literally NOTHING you can eat that will not attract criticism. One day a few years ago, I had just put dinner on the table in my front room and opened the door to let in air because it was a very hot day. As I sat down to eat dinner--broiled salmon with steamed broccoli and carrots, my literary rep suddenly ran in through the door, looked at me and screamed, loud enough so my neighbors ran over to check on me, "NO WONDER YOU'RE FAT. YOU EAT CARROTS!" (Some people believe carrots are too high in carbs to be considered a diet appropriate food). As my neighbors rushed in through the door, my literary rep told them all loudly about my bad eating. I think my neighbors were just glad I wasn't being murdered. They left quietly. It bothered me that no one defended me, but I've since come to realize that no one will if you're fat and they are not.

I don’t know what’s wrong with people to get into your business and accuse you of such habits if they don’t live with you and see what you eat and drink. Some people have slow metabolisms or take medication that messes with it or maybe their liver needs a detox from cleaning chemicals or whatever. So many things. Some people do hide foods and eat a lot or binge eat. Sugar creates a hunger hormone that makes you crave it more. And they dope up a lot of processed foods with MSG which stimulates the appetite. I did have a sister who was binge-eating huge amounts of ice cream and then she would purge herself of it. We’d get a carton or two of ice cream at the grocery store and before anyone else had a bite it was gone. I couldn’t understand how she could be slender and not gain weight. Found out when she was 30 that she was making herself vomit.

I do, mostly because I have the appetite of a horse but I also have a real sweet tooth. I’m type 1 diabetic so not meant to eat the amount of sugar that I do, hence I eat some of it in secret so I don’t have to face the lectures

@SW-User I use stevia to sweeten food. You can buy it in liquid form in various flavors.

I would lie by omission I suppose... like having a McDonald's after work then coming home (I lived with my parents at the time) and having dinner with my family. Other than that I just ate however I wanted, whoever could see. I had a snack drawer at work and know some other staff would talk about me as I was gaining weight but it didn't overly concern me.

Yes, I have done but never really thought about why. My flatmate works shifts and we don't often share meal times. If I've ordered takeaway a couple of times recently, I found myself throwing the 'evidence' away in the outside bin, or hiding some of the boxes under other rubbish already in the bin to hide what/how much I had.

Do I look like I could hide it????! 😂
