As a kid you got your allowance, went to the corner store and splurged it all on which goodies?

Nitedoc · 51-55, M
Allowance!? I mowed yards in the neighborhood since I was 9.
Nitedoc · 51-55, M
@Musicman I did three on Saturday morning. Got three dollars apiece for mowing them. I thought I was rich!
Musicman · 61-69, MVIP
@Nitedoc In those days you were. 🙂
Nitedoc · 51-55, M
@Musicman Yep, I guess so.
Justmeraeagain · 56-60, F
Usually a pop and candy bar.
Musicman · 61-69, MVIP
@Justmeraeagain My mom came from a large family like yours. I was a only child. My dad's mom lived to 98.
Justmeraeagain · 56-60, F
@Musicman my dad had a lot of siblings 13 .
My mom only had 3.
Musicman · 61-69, MVIP
@Justmeraeagain my mom had 11 siblings. My dad had 3.
LetsDance · 22-25, F
We didn't get an allowance and anything we earned was taken from us.
@LetsDance

That's so sad. By the way, Let's Dance was the first 45 I ever bought -

@rinkydinkydoink Cool video. I like the dance moves.
AdaXI · 41-45, T
I was never a big candy fan so any pocket money usually went on history and science magazines you'd collect fortnightly and put in ring binders...
When I was a bit older like 11+ computer games mainly. I remember saving for ages to buy a big second hand colour television for my bedroom so I could play them upstairs.

@AdaXI

You a brainy guy.
@AdaXI

Seriously. You are one of the most consistently humorous, informed, respectful and just plain smart folks on SW.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
I would go get a cheeseburger and fries at a local restaurant
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
I didn't have allowance but somehow always had money. I used to buy small bouncy rubber balls, chewing gums, tongue-dyeing popsicles, firecrackers, candy..
@CrazyMusicLover

Indian rubber balls were my favorite - if you threw them on the road really quick and hard, the second bounce was always spectacular.

Firecrackers were expensive! Especially the cannon crackers :D
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
@rinkydinkydoink I think a pack of corsairs were 20 korunas. 😆 I'm not sure though.

@CrazyMusicLover

Me like!
@Starcrossed

I GOT HYPER READING YOUR COMMENT!!!!!
Five cents doesn't buy as much as it did back then.
@rinkydinkydoink in 1967 five cents got me a handful of penny candy, or a candy necklace and a pack of candy cigarettes, five cherry sour balls that would make your eyes water, or about ten pixie sticks. That's a fortune when you're little.

@Roundandroundwego

Btw, I wasn't making fun of your comment (although it seems to read that way). Do you remember flat bubble gum that you had to smack real hard to shatter into bite-size pieces?
exexec · 61-69, C
Allowance and earnings from mowing went to model airplanes and fishing tackle or bait
LunarOrbit · 56-60, M
With a wooden stick! Ahhhhh the memory!

I never got an allowance. I had to get a paper route if I wanted cash.

My faves were Gobstoppers and Pixie Sticks. Bubble yum and Black Cat chewing gum. Roast Chicken flavoured potato chips. And cream soda pop.
@LunarOrbit

YES! I forgot that flat wooden spoon thing... LOL. Licking the lid was the real treat :D

I'm older than you - - we had barbeque, salt & vinegar and plain chips. That was it - - Shirriff and Lever's Majorette were favorites.
bookerdana · M
More likely comic books or a toy🤷‍♂
SeaGlass · F
I never got allowance, but I've been working since I was 12. When it came to treats, I mostly bought pizza and chocolate
Jenny1234 · 51-55, F
I never got an allowance. But I always bought this at the candy store.
No allowance ever.
i never had an allowance
@deathfairy

Most commenters never did, either :(

I got 35 cents which was the world waaaayyyy back when
pancakeslam · 41-45, M
I blew it at the arcade
Musicman · 61-69, MVIP
As a kid I worked. I never got an allowance. Working for my money I was careful how I spent it. When I looked at something and asked my dad what he thought he would always say "do you like it better than your money".
Musicman · 61-69, MVIP
@NativePortlander1970 I understand. My experience is construction and sales. Both need to be done in person. I actually do enjoy sales. 🙂
@Musicman I'm a natural cynic, I am poor at sales if I don't believe in the product, I never lasted more than a week in telemarketing, however I did alright doing catalog fulfillment call centers which is technically retail.
Musicman · 61-69, MVIP
@NativePortlander1970 I'm like you. I have to believe in the product or service. I can't rip people off.
Hostess cherry pies, green river soda, and milky ways or twix.
@Musicman Hopefully the old road stands still sell them on the byways.
Musicman · 61-69, MVIP
@NativePortlander1970 That would be pretty cool. 🙂
@Musicman Green River and YooHoo, the best road trip drinks in the world :)
