Just because i'm the only one that showed up to your bday, doesn't make me the "go-to" friend you rely on. I just naturally try to be there for people when i can, and move on.

Don't allow being nice to take priority over your boudaries. It's not your fault he's lonely,that's not your cross to bear. It may sound harsh but people like this can become energy vampires really quickly. If you don't stop it now he'll keep leaning on you more and more.

It's a catch 22 when lonely, needy people don't realize how off-putting it is when they do that. I've been that way myself in the past but now just don't try for contact much.
