Well, my dad finally apologized for not believing me on one aspect.
My whole life, I've had light sensitivity. When I was a little kid, I thought it was normal to experience a little twinge of pain whenever you turned on a light switch. It was only while I was in prison, dealing with artificial lights I couldn't turn off, that I began questioning why it was that lights hurt me and not other people. So I started researching.
Turns out, this is something that runs in my family. My biological family, I should say. Two of my aunts suffer the same thing, but my dad just couldn't believe that it was a real thing.
Oh, he humored me. He would turn off the light because I told him that it hurt when he turned it on. He used to warn me to go put on my hoodie and my sunglasses when he needed to turn the light on over his desk to look for something. But I don't think he ever believed me.
And so, at my eye exam today, the doctor mentioned that I have a cataract in my right eye. 49 seems a little young for that sort of thing, so I asked her about the light sensitivity. She said that some people are genuinely born with it, and that we have less pigmentation at the backs of our eyes to absorb the light, so it causes pain.
She also said that the cataract is probably a direct result of it.
Little too late to do something about it now, but Dad now realizes I'm not buӏӏsһіtting to get attention when I cry out in pain when he turns on the light.
