I don't know what is going through my dad's mind tonight.

He got up to go use the bаthrооm. Since the bаthrооm in the TV room is at the lowest point in the house, Mom reminded him that we don't роор in that one, because it always plugs up. I could hear him struggling not to fall as he sat down. Then I heard him come crashing down, anyway, and I jokingly said I would also appreciate it if he didn't break the tоіlet. I heard him mumbling under his breath that it's his to break. I said that we would be the ones to have to clean it up if he did. He replied to that with, "Since when do you ever clean anything?"

Why was he intentionally trying to provoke me? I thought we were having a nice evening.

Dementia can also cause irritability/mood swings. You have to try not to take it personally. A lot of times their agitation stems from confusion, I've found.

I worked on a geriatic psych ward unit for a while. I've worked with a lot of dementia folks. It's not easy. I can't imagine how some people manage them all by themselves at home. Some of them I was quite fond of though. Also I will say-in my years of working at acute psych hospitals with many severe and violent cases of mental illness and just plain bad people-the ONLY patient I ever got attacked by was a dementia grandpa. They'll get ya.
Epilogue: Turns out the problem was me. Mom thought I was overreacting as well. I guess I'm just too used to him picking fights.
